Spider, I bought a copy of Larry Shennum's book, "Winchester an Investment Option" from Bert, and some of the information he contributed to the book had to do with the polishing room records which show that this gun dates back to 1901. I think the dates given were based on a seven digit read rather than one of six digits. 0 -

I'm just totally confused. This appears to be a 6 digit serial number but there's a big disparity between 1901 (which I inadvertently typed as 1931 in the original thread)and 1942. Is there a 7th digit I'm not seeing? I think a 1942 Winchester would have to be over the 1,000,000 number but maybe it is and my eyes are failing me. I hate getting old! [:(!]0 -

After viewing Bert's post that you referenced, it was apparent to me that you did a typo to come up with 1931, and Bert made a very rare mistake on the DOM since a seven digit serial number beginning with 132 dates to 1942.0 -

That's what I get for typing in the dark! [B)]0 -

I thought I was going to get rid of my poncho too...but as things have turned out the NAM was a much safer place than the land of the big PX! [:D]
EDIT: Good eye, O-C.0 -
In my opinion it appears to have a 6 digit serial number (132013), but it also appears to have a replaced barrel if that is the serial number. It shouldn't have "Model 94" marked on the barrel. 0 -

Tom,
I apologize... It was a total brain Phart on my part[:I][B)][:I].
In explanation, I saw that the leading digit was "L" shaped, and I immediately assumed that there were 7-digits in the serial number. Nearly all of the Model 94s in the 1270000 - 1325000 serial range are found with that anomaly.
The serial number on that Model 1894 was manufactured in the late part of the year 1901.0 -

so was Winchester just being lazy or too cheap to make correct 1's? Or was it done on purpose? Is it a L or a upsidedown 7 or a upsidedown 1? I thought it was just odd when I bought it.0 -

No problem, Bert. At least I know I read your polishing room chart correctly (even though I typed a "3" instead of a "0") and we're all on the same page. Thanks for the clarification. [:)]0 -
Spider, Bert, et al,
I have done a little consolidating on the original topic to make room for 3 additional comments if that will help with this commentary.
