CETME 7.62 x 54

I have been looking for a .308 semiauto rifle. I am not looking to spend the $1200 and up for some of these rifles. I am intrigued by the various CETME type rifles. Is anyone familiar with these? They seem to be fairly reasonably priced in some instances.

    First off the caliber is 7.62x51mm Nato. The Cetme is OK rifle and can be found in the $5-600.00 range. I prefer the HK91 type as they have the fully adjustable rear sight. The Cetme's I have had all have windage problems( shooting either off to the right or left of aim) and the sight is not adjustable for windage.

    If you buy the front sight tool you can adjust for windage. You may want to replace the main recoil return spring.

    Probably because these less expensive ones are Century products and the barrels are mis-timed.

    Get a JLD PTR-91 or the Real Deal HK.

    Again its 7.62x51 NATO that is similar to .308 Winchester.

    If you want a semi-automatic rifle in 7.62x54R (the Mosin Nagant rifle round), the Romanian PSL rifle would be what you are after.

    Century-built CETME rifles have a poor reputation for quality and reliability, and this largely explains the low price. While its probably possible to find a good one, or fix a bad one, these are headaches that I think you'd rather avoid.

    It doesn't pay to spend $300 to fix up a malfunctioning $600 rifle to end up with a functioning $600 rifle.

    If you want a cheap but durable .308 rifle for roughly the same price as the Century CETME guns, you could check out the Saigas, which are basically sporterized AKs. They won't win beauty contests, and they're not likely to be sniper-accurate, but they're tough as nails and will run forever.

    Find a shop that sells both the Cetme and the PTR 91. Rack the bolt on the both guns. The PTR 91 is like glass the Cetme is gritty and and hard to charge.

    I had a Cetme. Overall it worked. Charging it was pita! It really took some effort to pull that gritty bolt back.

    One of these days I'll break down and buy a PTR 91.

    Hi,

    This CETME is a good shooter. It can plink bowling pins at 100 yards with no problem, but it won't be delivering any sub-MOA groups at that distance. It is a later Century Arms rework. Century Arms had a lot of the quality issues worked out in the end. Many of the reliability problems associated with the CETME are related to bad magazines and lack of cleaning of the roller locking system. CETME's are also known to require a long break-in period.

    A rifle like this is not a precision tool though and it cannot be expected to be.

    buddy bought a new 2010 Toyota full size truck was in the shop more then my car is old for the same thing,,, sold it.

    (PS: that lemon law thing is a joke)he went that route with yota

    bought a new 2010 Chevy truck, been in the shop now 10 times so far for the same thing.

    and yes we get all makes/models in the shop and see some crap being made now days.

    When you've fixed as many Century shytboxes as I have, you can tell me how great they are.

    Ten years ago it was FALs with barrels which were 8 degrees under or overtimed and rifles which closed on "Field" gauges with ease. (that's bad, BTW)

    Now it's CETME junk kits with crooked front sights, and bolts ground on the rear to artificially establish correct bolt gap.

    Garbage. Garbage which gives entire rifle types a bad name. Look at how horribly they've slurred the Galil name with their ORF junk receivers.

    Would it be better if they had to charge 100 dollars more for proper Quality Control? Sure. It'd be better for everyone. But then they'd not be able to cater to their demographic. The Cheapster.

    And comparing cars isn't really valid. Because cars are built by Union hacks. Unions, purveyors and promoters of mediocrity. The hemlock to any virtuous endeavor.
