Marlin model 28 slide action

I am repairing a marlin model 28 shotgun for a friend. It has a broken firing pin, and broken bi-metal flat spring for the trigger. I can repair this gun but was wondering if it is really safe to fire. As far as I could tell it was made somewhere between 1913, and 1922? Any comments or suggestions?

    If this is the exposed hammer model there are safety checks for this shot gun on the net and if you use 1898 Marlin Shot Gun you will find a discription of how to take it down and check the weapons for safe operation. These shot guns use a non standard shell length and the one I have needs light loads. The 1898 I have shoots more like a rifle than a shoot gun.

    Unless you have a 28A, they were made from 1913-1915- they kept making the 28A until 1922. This was in the smokeless era, but there WAS a 12 g shell shorter than 2 3/4s- I THINK it was 2 5/16ths. Just because a 2 3/4 will chamber does NOT make it safe to shoot- you need additional length for shell to open. Have a smith check the actual length, use the right ammo.

    Marlin has declared certain models of the old pump guns unsafe...maybe they have some exceptions,not sure.
    I know they are not allowed at SASS cowboy action events because of Marlin's thinking.
