I have a Mossberg 500C 20ga;serial #J470802. Can anyone tell me when this was manufactured or how I can find out.

  what year were these first sold.did the first ones have serial numbers?

  The Mossberg 500 was introduced in 1961. I believe they have always had serial numbers but I'm not sure.

  I believe the Gun Control Act of 1968 required serial numbers; prior to that it was catch-as-catch-can.

  I have a 500B with no serial number. My 500A,C,and E all have serial numbers.
