DPMS SASS
OK im looking at buying a DPMS SASS. On the auction side the one I looked at says,"The barrel on these rifles is marked 7.62x51 so you can shoot military ammo as well as Commercial 308 Winchester ammo without any concerns. Many other 308 semi auto rifles are actually marked "308 Winchester" which prevents you from safely shooting 7.62x51 NATO ammo". I thought the opposite was true and the 308 was the hotter round. So can these shoot 308? Also any thoughts on this particular rifle would be appreciated.

The 7.62x51 and the 308 are the same bullet "almost". On the 7.62x51 the powder chamber is .13" longer. The case is also thicker. The 7.62x51 is slightly more powerful. I don't think it would hurt shooting either bullet out of either barrel. Hope that helps. -Rob 0 -
The same is true for 5.56x45 and 223 remmington. The safety police will tell you that what you read in the auction is correct. The reality is IMHO that for modern AR's they are interchangeable, and that I wouldn't worry about it. 0 -
I dont think it is recommended to shoot a .308win in a 7.62 chambered gun..
Chambers in both cartridges can be alittle different, as a rule the 7.62 chamber is little longer then .308win.
If I'm not mistaken one needs to field gage the 7.62nato barrel useing a .308win gage before shooting .308win from a 7.62nato.
If the gun in question will fully seat a .308 gage it is not safe to fire .308 Winchester through.
