Winchester M70 pre 64 questions
A gun shop near me has a model 70 heavy barrel gun for sale, the hang tag says made in 1957 243 varmint. I know little about pre 64 model 70's but Everything about it seems correct except for: the receiver and barrel are a matte finish, is this right? Also the muzzle crown is cut flat(cut straight across the end of the barrel) and is shiny metal, is this correct? the gun has sight blocks mounted on the front of receiver and about 1/3 down barrel and just two screws where the front sight would be. Bolt# matches the receiver#. The guy wants 2 grand for this thing and I'm about to beg borrow and steal to get it, I like it!

The matt finish seems correct. Model 70 varmints were made in 243 and 220 swift. What type stock does it have? the target styled marksman without checkering or the sporter style with checkering 0 -
I have one of those M70's. Mine was made in 1959. I believe I bought it used, around 1960. You don't want to know what I paid for it! I have it across my knees as I type this. Everything in your description sounds right. Those blocks were for the old target/varmint scopes (Unertl, etc.). The muzzle crown is right, too. The barrel is made of stainless steel and, since stainless couldn't be blued, Winchester iron plated the barrel and then blued the iron. The muzzle either wasn't iron plated or was crowned afterwards. They came with the standard sporter style checkered stock, slightly curved plastic butt plate, and no screw as was used in the fore-end of the standard M70 (1/2 way between the fore-end tip and the magazine). The first load I tried in mine was Rem. case, CCI200 primer, 75 gr. Sierra HP and 40 gr. of H4895. That load shot so well, I never changed. I long since lost track of the crows I shot with this thing!
