AK 47 vs. Ruger Mini 30
Greetings,
The Ruger Mini 30, not many variants, vs. lets say, a Milled Receiver AK-47. Pros and Cons please.
Also, is the Russian AK that much better than a Bulgarian or Yugoslavian one?

Welcome to the forum. Two basically different rifles. The AK is more military looking (because it is), more rough and tumble...throw it in the mud wash it off in the river and go on shooting. Accuracy about the same, angle of hand at 100 yards. The Russian AK is probably thought of a little more highly. I have a milled receiver Romanian that shoots whatever you feed it and is a little more accurate than the average AK. You really need to ask yourself, why am I buying it? 0 -
you might look at the price and availabilty of ammo and extra mags. this may sway your opinion. 0 -
Milled AK hands down, the mini-30s main weakness is the fact that after market mags for the 7.62x39 version are not very reliable..
AK Pros
-The AK was designed around the cartidge
-It is utterly reliable and simplicity itself to clean
-military surplus mags from 20 to 100 rounds are available for it, and are cheap.
-With a picatinny dog leg mount, ruffly twice the mounting space is available over the mini, meaning a red dot and maganifier is easy to mount.
-Fore end rails are easy to install.
Cons-
-they are kinda heavy when loaded up and set up with a rail, light, and red dot.
Mini-30 pros
-It handles well and has a slim profile.
-mags dont need to be rocked into place
-the sights are east to adjust
-there are stainless models
cons
-it doesnt come with a warranty
-reliable mags are hard to find in comparison to the AK
-the action is open to debris
-one has to take it out of its stock to clean it
-good scope mounts are hard to find
-good folding stocks are hard to find
-its hard to get a good check weld with a scope mounted0 -
aks are half the price. more reliable, mags are a dime a dozen. i have both. and a stamped receiver shoots as good as any milled one! its a no brainer. 0 -
I second the thought of the milled reciever AK. Either a Poly Tech Legend, Bulgarian, or something built by Arsenal USA. There are a lot more goody's available, and I once had an SLR95, that was extremely accurate for an AK.

Had both and good rifles for thier applications. The mini is more accurate compact and more beautiful...
The AK is a reliable combat rifle. As rough and tumble as it looks. The stocks look like they come off recycled pallets.0 -
You can buy all sorts of nice aftermarket stocks and goodies for AKs.
Google it.
Milled receiver AKs are heavier and the wearing parts, the locking lugs,
being integral with the receiver, cant be replaced.
Either way, they're long lived so the value of being able to replace these wearing parts is academic.
You can also go on the cheap and buy a Russian Saiga for which there is also a wide world of conversion parts and it's Russian made.0 -
It mostly depends how you are going to treat the gun and what you are going to use it for. The price of the weapon and cartridge may influence you as well.-Rob 0 -
Yeah between the two the AK is the one to pick. Now if for some reason lean towards the mini-30 how about considering the SKS. It also shoots 7.63x39 and isn't configured like the infamous Ak47. Most of the SKS's that I have shot over the years have shot somewhat more accurate then the AKs that I have known. 0 -
Since when is any Ruger not covered by warranty? In my experience they take care of what they sell as well as anyone, better than most. Certainly on the "pro" side for me, especially when comparing it to any of the the AK's. 0
