Magpul questions
Is it worth replacing the factory stock and grip with the magpul miad and ctr? Also are the plastic mags better than the milspec aluminum im crrently using? Any and all opinions or personal expieriences are greatly appreciated. Btw to all who responded to my previuos post thank you. I went with an eotech 552.

By factory do you mean an A2 stock or a collapsible stock? I like a collapsible stock on my carbines and I replaced the A2 with a Magpul PRS on my long range AR. I don't like the MIAD, but do like the ERGO grips. I like the pmags over the metal mags.
I think you will find 90% of this is personal preference.0 -

Entirely a question of personal preference.
If you like the feel of the MIAD grip more than the one you've got or other aftermarket grips, go for it.
IMO, the biggest advantage of the MIAD is that you can increase the trigger pull length with a thicker rear insert. That's good if you have long fingers or a large hand, and its not something you can't do with most aftermarket grips.
On the CTR stock. . .again, entirely personal preference. If you like its look or feel, go for it. Remember, if you're replacing a FIXED stock with the CTR collapsible stock, you'll also need to get a receiver extension tube, and probably swap spring and buffer to install this.
If you're replacing a factory collapsible stock with the CTR stock, you just have to make sure you get the stock that fits the buffer tube you've got (ie either military type or commercial type).
On aluminum vs Magpul polymer magazines, the biggest advantage of the P-mags is that they're less prone to lip wear, and supposedly they'll keep longer loaded without firing, where as the milspec ones will loosen up in the lip area after time. The P-mags may be a bit tougher overall, though if you don't abuse the mags, that probably doesn't matter.0 -
As stated it is going to be preference. I dont care for either the CTR or the MIAD grip.
I have a Magpul UBR on one of my AR's, a PRS on one with plans for another on a different.
I have gone to P-mags other then the USGI 20rd mags for my Target AR.
For gips I really like the ERGO grip and have them on most of my AR's and have modified them to fit on a few others.
Magpul makes some great products.0 -
I like the MIAD grip, I have it on my Stag. As far as mags go, I have both USGI and Magpul, they have all functioned perfectly. I did replace all of the followers in the USGI mags with Magpul anti-tilt followers though. 0 -
I put the Magpul CTR on my Stag carbine and I like it much better than the factory stock. It's locking mechanism keeps it tight and quiet.
I also like Magpuls' MOE grip, never tried the MIAD. Ergo is good too.
For years I only used GI magazines then I tried the Pmags and have used them ever since. I won't throw away my GI mags, but the Magpuls are excellent in my opinion. I've only used the 30 rnd, but will try some 20s when I get around to it.0 -
Well In my opinion it is more then just a matter of preferance when it comes to collapsible carbine stocks. especially when scopes are being used. cheap plastic stocks generally have alot of play in them.
The CTR is the lightest stock that I know of that fixes that. So if you dont want the rattle and the wobble the CTR is a good option, So is the magpul UBR and the Ace socom stock.
Ace also makes a fixed stock that I like well.

The Magpul mags are decent, I have used them and they will take about the same amount of punishment as an aluminum mag, but takeing them down for cleaning is much easier.
If you want hard to kill magazines then my luck has been with Lancer L5 plastic mags..0 -
I like the Magpul Miad and the Magpul CTR stocks on certain guns. I actually prefer the Hogue grips and A2 buttstocks but every thing has a place. You have to realise that most stuff out there is a quality product or these companies would not be in business, and is nothing more than preference. Every body has their own thing as far as AR's go. If you like something just buy it and use it. One person may like a certain thing and the next person may not. What you need to do is go handle some of this stuff on your own and decide if you like it and if it's what trips your trigger. AR's are like pizza and beer you won't get 2 people to agree on the same thing. 0 -
First question to you is "How do you plan on having it set up?" "What is your goal with the rifle?"
I can tell you I like a Standard fixed stock over any collapsible stock for shooting off the bench. The heavy adjustable PRS stock is really nice for shooting prone. Neither are handy when toting and going in and out of tight places. I put a Magpul ACS "Operator" on mine. I like it as a carbine stock but I will tell you shooting off the bench through tears because it pulled out mustache hairs wasn't easy! Still, when careful, it works well enough.
My point here is, decide how you want it configured. The best way to come up with that is ask yourself "Why" you want it that way. Then make the gun work together with itself. I've seen a bunch of guys go out and do the ultimate varmint upper. Then go with a collapsible light buttstock that doesn't serve the same purpose as the upper they chose. Same for you. Why put a short buttstock on there if you have a 20" barrel? Then decide what works for you and what doesn't. I like my ACS I didn't like the CTR.
As far as magazines go I have friends who swear by the newer 'compostite' mags. Not plastic, composite. I personally just can't get my mindset away from metal. Metal makes more noise. If it gets dented it's just as broke as a 'composite' that got smashed. Enough sand can jam either one. 'Composite' is probably the way to go.0 -
No personal expeirnce with those stocks.
Just make sure before you buy whether you have a mil spec or commercial buffer tube. They are different diameters.0
