Stiller actions
Anyone using the stiller 408 action?Are they any good what are there pluses and minuses? I`m planning on building a 375 allen mag in a repeater.

I haven't used one of the .408 Stiller's and I probably won't. Jerry has had his share of problems with geometry and manufacturing so I will let these be until I feel confident that his bugs are worked out.

If KA knew anything about ballistics, he would be worth reading. Since he doesn't, I don't waste my time. His method is to take the next biggest cartridge case, neck it down, improve the case dimensions slightly and give it his name. What this will get you is an overbore cartridge with minimum performance improvement unless you go with a significantly longer barrel. If this is your cup of tea, enjoy!
The cost of components, actions and shooting escalate to the point where most folks can't afford to shoot these things. If you can, I think that's great and you are a good candidate for one of these.

I don't think Kirby Allen ever claimed to be a ballistician but he sure can build very accurate rifles. 0 -

Brand loyalty or personal preference is hard thing to dispute. I didn't mean to offend you or your opinion. But I will state that mine, from personal experience and a far better education and experience with ballistics, differs.
No he hasn't made that claim in writing. Rather, by 'creating' his proprietary lines of cartridges, he is cast in that role. As I wrote above in a very simplified description, his operating process is to take the next bigger case and neck it down, improve the dimensions slightly then chamber it in the longest barrel the customer will tolerate. Without the longer barrels, we have no use for the over-abundant powder capacity. Without incredibly expensive optics, we have no reason to attempt shots at the ranges he claims for these cartridges. Without a huge investment in time, materials and practice, most average folks couldn't even come close to hitting target at those ranges.
This is not unlike many of the high pressure, high velocity cartridges available prior to his offerings. It's a process that we all see and read about every time there is a 'new' cartridge case released to the public. It gets necked up and down by every wildcatter in the world who is looking to be the next great cartridge 'designer' in order to achieve some degree of notoriety. For every variation of wildcat that we see or read about, there are probably 1,000 others just like it or near enough to be the same but that haven't hit the light of day.

That may be true. I do know for a fact that there are literally hundreds of great rifle builders out there that can build accurate rifles and do so every day. They are all busy and stay busy because they are talented and consistent.
Please don't take this personally. I don't mean it to be personal at all. This is just two sides of the same coin. If I offended you, I apologize. I have gone back through this and edited it a little more carefully...

You're absolutely right, there's always two side of any story. All I was trying to say is that Kirby Allen used all kinds of actions for many customers and am sure has quite the experience and is willing and able to share. BTW, he happens to be a nice guys. Having said that if I have an Allen Magnum line question, I'd go to him. The same is also true if I have a ballistic question, i.e., 210 gr .308 Berger VLD hunting round, I'd seek Bryan Litz's opinion.
