First AR-15 advice
I'll be buying my first AR - first semi-auto centerfire rifle period - this week and would like some opinions for my price range.
I can justify spending $1500 but the lower the better. The less I spend on the AR the more I'll have for accessories.
All I really know is from what I've read on them... Colt is king and RRA, Bushmaster and DPMS are quality. I'm not concerned with brand name or buying the top of the line but would prefer new. Most important things to me would be a light crisp pull and the higher the accuracy the better. It'll be mostly for plinking, maybe some 'yote hunting and defense if a civil war starts [;)]. Should I consider other brands or other styles completely.

I for one wasn't ever even tempted by the Colt rifles. IMO, they are over priced and don't do anything the others don't do as well. Way back when I bought Bushmaster and a milspec no name brand lower that I built up from there. I've never been disappointed with either. Oylmpic Arms and Armalite are worth a look also. Most milspec rifles will have disappointing triggers and you should just price in replacing it with an aftermarket trigger. Which AF trigger will probably be another question to be posted here later. I would suggest that you stay with milspec type rifles because the vast majority of aftermarket stuff is for them. The proprietary systems limit what you can do with what is the most flexable rifle platform in existance. By popping the two pins you can swap uppers between a flat top varmint rig to a carry handle 16" combat model in 3 seconds. The AR type rifles are great and you IMO, have made a good choice. 0 -
If you are looking for a good trigger and an accurate AR, I would suggest an STI competition or tactical. They are about $1200 and have a match trigger out of the box & long comped barrel. In pistols at least, STI is the best of the best. The rifles are a newer offering, but people are using them in 3 gun.
Check them out at least. It's one of those "custom out of the box" types.

Dpms with a jp trigger! I bought the sweet sixteen they call it last fall love that gun! very accurate gun out to about 210 yards probably more accurate but im kinda underpowered in the scope department. the price is right on them. bout 850 last time i checked. that will leave you with some extra cash to put into the gun/ammo 0 -
You are starting off on the right foot; I like that better than the guys who ask, "What's the cheapest one I can buy?" Everything you are considering is great quality, & it will be difficult for you to go wrong.
I suggest that you order exactly what you want from the factory. The only accessory you really need to worry about is optics, & you want to decide that before you order the rifle. Take a look at the RRA website, & see how easy it is to custom-order the configuration that works best for you. (Their varmint model with the 2-stage trigger will reach out & touch any 'yote within sight.)

Colt M4 .223/5.56mm is my recommendation simply for the quality and value, i just left the "Auction" side of GunBroker.com, there are several within your price range, once more, for optics i recommend you spend and equal amount for glass, but THAT is just me..... 0 -
A sharp shopper should be able to get the rifle, 20 mags (or 10 mags and a fair scope) and 1000 rounds of ammo for $1500. 0 -
RRA Coyote 16", 20 round PMags and Hornady ammo 50 pack for $30. Then your choice of optic if desired. 0 -
you might take an extra look at the rock river line of AR's. i would not trade mine for a target rifle of the same caliber. simply unbelievable what that shooter will do with some hand loads i cooked up. i bought it used with an eotech hologram sight on it for about 1k. i felt like the only other things i needed the day i got my hands on that shooter were a gun and a mask. imo i stole it. 0 -
Let me jump on the RRA bandwagon I ordered a 20" from the factory with a few options and I couldn't be happier with it. I put a Burris scope on it and I can shoot out to 500 yds no problem. The gun is certainly more accurate than I am. 0 -

+1 Colt 6920 is the way to go.
