I need help figuring out how to run a guns serial number.

Why do you want to run a serial number? If you suspect a firearm is stolen then it must be taken to a police department where they can run the standard search for firearms which have been reported as stolen and are in the data base. If it is not there it some not mean you are in the clear, it just means that no one has reported it missing. Some state like California have very detained data base on handguns and can locate the purchaser via a search in the Department Of Justice registry, but this can only be accessed if there is a suspicion that the firearms has been used in a crime and every time the registry is searched the DOJ wants a report from the agency who ran the search asking for specifics as to why they ran the serial number. Because of the Q&A session from the DOJ many agencies won't do the search unless they are convinced that the firearms is stolen (and then they will want to know why you have it) or suspect it has been used in a crime (and then want to know why you have it). No one will run the serial number just for the heck of it or to satisfy your curiosity. 0 -
