collecting question

hello i would like some advice on collecting, i am thinking of purchasing a new desert eagle 1911g, or a (colt) ar-15 , which firearm do u see beeing worth more in 25-30 years. or is there any other i should look at as well.

    I'm no expert on collectable firearms, but collectables in general a good rule of thumb is that it should be rare (not a lot made, or a whole lot destroyed for some reason.) or noteworthy (the only type like that) or distinctive quality (the best made at the time, or embelished with higher value materials).

    So, looking at those two examples: Not to hurt anyones feelings, but Desert Eagle is not a brand that is respected by too many people who know guns. Colt has a better reputation, not to mention a history of collectable guns. On the other hand, there are certainly a lot of Colt AR-15's out there.

    I don't know what to recommend, other than to get one you like to shoot, but those 2 you're asking about probably aren't the best choices for future values.

    I think you are going about it rather backwards. You pretty much can't buy new guns with the idea that they will be valuable in 25 or 30 years. You would have to keep them untouched in the boxes the whole time, and there is really no way to know where collector interest will go. If you buy new, but guns you want to shoot and take good care of them. If you want to collect, but firearms that are already acollectables, there is a much greater chance they will continue to evaluate.

    buy WW1 &WW2 U.S. weapons in great shape, you can use and enjoy them and they still go up in value.Garands,Carbines,1911's,1903's,colt AR's from the 70's .[:)][^][8D] MY 2 CENT's

    You mention you want to collect, but didnt state whether the motive was financial or enjoyment. You can do both. The "blue chip" brands in the gun collectible field is Colt and Winchester. Go where YOUR interests are, for example, you mention a 1911...so buy a Colt 1911 instead of the clones. Enjoy it, shoot it if you want, use it but dont abuse it. Save all paperwork and boxes. Then when you decide to sell, you will make money on the gun and would have enjoyed it in the meantime. The same with an AR15. If you buy a non Colt brand, while perhaps good, they usually dont go up in value once they are used. The Colt will. The key unless you are strictly after investment is to go after what you enjoy, that way any financial gain is secondary.

    duff81...thanks for your question. If you want to collect, and shoot, and have value at the same time, purchase the best as you always get what you pay for. So, keeping that in mind, if you want a 1911, save your money and get Colt 1970 or pre-1970. Always go for quality first and you get to shoot it for years and it still appreciates in value. AR? Get a Colt as it will keep it's value. Lever rifle? Get an older Winchester...the ones made in the last twenty years are junk, IMHO. .22? Get a Smith 41 or a Browning Medalist. I learned early on that quality is ALWAYS the best policy...it costs more, but you end up with a collection that you can shoot with confidence and can pass on value to your heirs. Good luck!

    Shop around for what you like and see if you can find good value. Dont be hasty and check and verify your decisions...
    There is much wisdom in the advice here. However like buying cars and houses everyone's needs and desires vary.

    thanks gary that is just the advice i was looking for. i want to start a collection of guns that i can pass down to my kids that they would appreciate and use. just as my father has done for me i guess u could call it pride
