Amazon is advertising "New- just shipped from Isreal" M-15 (military) for $39, I'm guessing these would be ok and meet the criteria or that other website?

Sorry, I'm all new to this.

I'm not even going to ask why you want this. . .

IIRC, Israel provides all its citizens gas masks (or requires that every citizen has one) in case of chemical/biologic/nuke attack, and has done this for years. Since Israel hasn't suffered a CNB attack*, most of these sit unused for years, except maybe for the occasional drill. Presumably the older staler ones end up on the surplus market.

Being Devil's advocate, these might be "new in box" (ie never used), and "just shipped from Israel", but still have been manufactured in the 1980s meaning the filters are aged and no longer functional.

I think if you were to drop in a new filter, you'd be fine.

Also note that if you've never actually tried one of these things, they are somewhat uncomfortable, hot, claustrophobia-inducing, and make it hard to see and/or breathe. They're basically intended just to protect you for the short time it takes to get the f out of the nuke/anthrax zone.

*Saddam Hussein threatened to use chemical weapons against Israel during the first Gulf War, though I don't think there is good evidence that he actually did. On hearing the threat, then Israeli Prime Minister Shamir responded that if Iraq used chemical weapons against Israel, Israel would "retaliate with every weapon in its arsenal". That was a coded threat of nuclear retaliation, and Hussein backed off.

Does anyone know of a cheap surplus that is effective against nuclear, bio and/or chemical attack, or is it basically you get what you pay for?

I can personally vouch for the British S10 respirator. You can pick them up in top condition from many UK Army Surplus shops for as little as ?20. Even with international shipping, I can't see it being much more than about $60.

Consider a Mk IV NBC suit to go with it.

You can probably find 'em on eBay too...

Recently moved to the D.C. area and thought I might pick one up "just in case" when I saw some for $10-$20. (not that I could get to it in time if anything were to happen) The reviews on Amazon showed most were past the 20 yr expiration date, I think it has to do with the quality of the rubber mask that makes the seal around your face. I'll check out the British S10, thanks guys.
