Custom Mauser Model 98 with engraving need info
I may or may not be right in any of my information. This is what I have been able to gather about the rifle:
-Originally a Mauser model 1898
-Re manufactured into a custom hunting rifle by a gunsmith by the name of H. Ansorg in the town of Zella-Mehlis.
Any one know more about it?

A lot of this type of converted Mauser sporters were made for our G.I.'s in the mid to late 40's after the war. Yours looks like one of them. Value would be based mostly on cosmetics, as their is no collectors value. It might have been refinished, the high polish blue looks like something done in the States, rather then by one of the old time kraut gunsmiths. 0 -

I would say, and I am by no means the final definitive expert, that what you have is a mod 98 action customized by a German gunsmith of moderate skills. Not to degrade its quality but as in comparison to similar Mausers. The game scenes are direct stencil copies of familiar images on previous German hunting guns. The engraving is decorative but not high quality, although relief engraving as opposed to scroll. Stock work is of similar quality. Again just my opinion of grade. It still represents a far better rifle than what you would pull down off the commercial shelf today. Do you intend on hunting with it? Looks like a nice stalking rifle. Scoping the rifle is out of the question due to the engraving, the caliber is odd but brass and bullets are readily available. I would take a guess of value approx $1200. 0 -
I agree with JM above, nice rifle. I don't believe this is a rebuilt military, rather a new action built into a nice (not great) stalking rifle. If it was refinished ( I doubt it), it is a very good job. 0 -
I too, think that's a beautiful rifle! I have to disagree, though, with the comment that there is something odd about the 8x57JS chambering. I believe that's the European designation for the standard .323 dia. bullet 8x57 Mauser. 0 -

Herman Ansorg was born July 29, 1889 and was a gunmaker at several addresses in Zella-Mehlis, last reported working circa 1943. The rifle most likley has been reblued and not made for a GI, at least not one of ours. Zella-Mehlis is about twenty miles from the gunmaking center of Suhl which was in East Germany. 0
