12 guage deer slug barrel needed?

Dumb question here;

To shoot deer slugs in my 12 gauge Remington Wingmaster 870, do I need a different barrel than the stock 31" vented? I'm assuming so, I just have no idea...

    It depends on how your shotgun shoots slugs. Is it a fixed choke? If it is fixed(no screw in choke tubes) and shoots slugs acuratly then you don't need anything different.

    And assuming it is not a full choke barrel.

    It will shoot slugs. But if you are planning on accuracy beyond 40 yards, a special slug barrel is required. The fully rifled slug barrels like Hastings will deliver accuracy out to 125 yds or slightly farther if you practice with the proper slugs.

    I use a Hastings rifled slug barrel with a built in compensator. This barrel has a cantelever scope mount. Also use high quality Brenneke slugs in it. Last deer is shot this season was 153 yards, another at 80 yards. Good well over 100 yard equipment. Highly recommended.

    No screw in choke threads, it's a fixed choke.

    I'm more interested in close range shooting with it, less than 40 yards. It looks like slugs would make a good bear stopper when I'm camping in bear country. [:D]

    Get a rifled slug barrel,,red dot scope and Hornady SSTs..deadly

    Does the "full choke" mean it will not shoot slugs correctly/safely?

    I have been using Remington Sluggers in a full choke 12-gauge smooth bore for years and have taken deer out to 125 yards on more than one occasion. As long as you use Foster type slugs you should have no problem. Most of the guys around here hunt with smooth bores simply because they find the rifled barreled guns and sabots don?_Tt give them that much of an advantage and cost quite a bit more. Why spend a bunch of money on another barrel when the gun you have now will do the job.

    Have you ever seen a warning on a box of slugs "Not for use in full choke guns"? That is your answer. If it would damage the full choked gun there would be a warning. Try a few rounds for accuracy and see if it is satisfactory.

    I shot them in a full choke as well and found it very acurate. I haven't shot boxes of them, but quite a few.
