Pistol Storage ?

[:)] Hello everyone ! I'm fairly new to this forum and have only posted once before. I do drop in from time to time and follow your discussions and find them to be very informative and quite entertaining.

[?] My question concerns the storing of my Colt Python's. I would like to know how I should be storing my "boys" in a safe. Should I put them in a gun sock, keep them in the factory boxes or leave them uncovered ? My safe is a Browning fire proof with a dehumidifier and I have not had any problems to date.

I want to thank you in advance and keep up the GREAT discussions on this forum.

    if you haven't seen any problems so far then your doing it right.

    Boxes are what the guns sit in until they are sold, which could be months. Only problem is that boxes take up lots of space.

    Boxes used today may be OK. However cardboard can hold moisture and may be slightly acid. I have seen small pitting where a gun was in the box for a long time. Of course your dehumidifier should prevent that. I like a gun sock.

    Colt buys their packaging from vendors, like everyone else. The materials change over time, but the manufacturers don't care because they are intended for marketing & protection during shipment. None of the packaging is intended for long term storage, & even proximity to your guns may ruin them. That's especially true of cardboard boxes & paper tags, which are often highly acidic.

    You have the 2 main causes of gun loss (theft & moisture) covered very well. Gun socks work well in a safe & prevent handling marks. One other possibility is to store the guns in individual heavy duty plastic bags intended for gun storage; Brownells sells them.

    I am currently experimenting with the food storage vacuum sealed bags. They protect the guns from nicks and don't take up much room in the safe.

    A gun sock also will wipe off some finger prints when the gun is inserted. Of course it is better to wipe down any gun after handling.
    Also you need to wipe wood grips with the correct oil. The dehumidifier may cause them to dry and crack.

    Its debatable what the "best" way is to store handguns. While there are "wrong" ways, I'd also say there are multiple "right" ways.

    I'd say, so long as they are kept in a low humidity environment, cleaned and oiled for storage, locked, and you avoid rapid swings in temperature, you're doing what needs to be done.

    Now, as to whether or not you need to keep them in a box, in an appropriate gunsock, etc, that comes down to personal preferences, eg:

    How much storage space do you have? How much are you willing to spend on this? Are you handling the guns a lot? Ever? Taking them out to be used? Do you have factory boxes that need to be preserved, or do you have aftermarket boxes? Etc.

    You can do what works for you, and you don't necessarily have to store every one of your guns in the same way. EG: You can store the "original" Python in its factory box, and you can store the "shooter" loose for easy access (but locked).
