Welcome to the forum....338 might be a little more caliber for varmint hunting than you need. If the shooting gets fast and furious and you are shooting from a rest...you will really beat yourself up. 243 Win or a 25-06 is all you need for varmints at long range. After 200 to 300 rounds even they start to get to you. And at 500+ to 1000 yards you will miss a few so be prepared for follow up shots...thats right shooting a AR will allow for that. It will be interesting.

    Thanatos,

I would like to get a little more clarifications as to which cartridges your referring to in your title and question.

The AR30 is chambered for 3 cartridges:

    .308 Win.
    .300 Win. Mag.
    .338 Lapua

Give us a little more information and we can try to help you with this question.

    Best.

    Thanatos,

Rob was having some fun with you.

The .338 Lapua and the .338 Lapua Magnum are both the same cartridge just two different ways to write the name.

    Best.

There was just a thread that closed on this very subject. I would look it over. My money would be on the 338 RUM in a customized 700 type action...or a 300 RUM.

    Best

    Here is the thread
