Charter Arms AR-7

Any one have experience with these. Also made by Armalite and Henry. I was given one by a co-worker. Its in good shape. I did notice that it has a hard time cycling HP 22Lr ammo but the fmjs are ok. It also needs a spring for the mag release. Came with 10 or 8rn mag and a 30rnd mag(which I cant find anywhere). But hey free is free.

    I shot one of these a while back, pretty accurate, too bad there wasn't room for extra ammo storage. I know Gene Stoner designed it for the military, but was it actually used by them? Thanks.

    I worked on a Explorer II pistol recently, (Charter made them in the mid 80's along with the rifles). It didn't function at all. I had to tweak the magazine lips, slightly chamfer the end of the chamber and put in a larger diameter magazine latch pin to even get it to work with .22 round nose solids, it was still problematical with H.P's though.

    The ones made by Charter never had a good reputation. Good thing you didn't have to pay for it, you came out ahead on the deal.

    Thanks for the info.

    Big Loop xtra thanks for the diagram and info. I'm gunna try and tweak it to operate smoother. It will at least be fun for my son when he is able to hold it.

    Have two early models. They both shot well only with hi vel CCI stinger type ammo. In recent years I polished all the metal parts, used some good old "Gunslick" (fine lapping compond) and now they both shoot std hi vel rounds. Have not had a problem with the Mags, no spring changes, but mine were very early models.

    Nice little guns (for what they are).

    I have a Henry model AR-7. Its feeds any ammo I put in it reasonably well. I get the occasional jam every now and then. Biggest problem i have is its about a 60" moa. Its really only good close range. I use it checking my trap lines. Its a great gun to keep in the trunk or under the seat.

    I had one in the early to mid '70s. It wasn't a very good or high quality rifle by any stretch. Not all that much fun beacuse of lots of jams. I tired of it and sold it. [V]

    I've had both a rifle & pistol. Both had TERRIBLE triggers. It wasn't so much a problem of jams as it was a failure to extract. The pistol almost never extracted a fired cartridge.

    +++ on magazine problems needing to be tweaked.
    Don't even think about shooting any subsonics.
