Need the date of birth for my new mod 12 Winchester Ser# 617944 -30 in full choke TIA Jeff Kessler

  A Winchester Model 12 with serial number 617944 would have been manufactured in 1930 according to Dave Riffle's book on the Model 12.

  your model 12 is right around the break between nickel steel and proof steel....what does the barrel legend read...nickel or proof??

  Proof Steel barrels were introduced in the latter part of 1931, circa serial number 640000. Jeff's Model 12 will undoubtedly have a Nickel Steel barrel.
