Need Value and Model for old S&W revolver
I acquired a S&W revolver, and cannot find the model number on it.
It is a self-extractor revolver--bird`s head wood grips, in 38 S&W, with a four inch barrel. It is pinned and is as tight and sound as a new revolver. It does have some finish loss due to being in a leather holster whild stored in a safe.
On top of the barrel are the words: Smith and Wesson--Springfield, Mass USA, and the patent dates of 2-6-06, 9-14-08, 12-28-14.
On tfe right side of the barrel are the words: 38 S&W special CTO.
The serial number on the grip is 37426. Their are four screws on the right side of the receiver.
Model Number please, and value if known.

sounds like you are describing the .38 MILITARY&POLICE (MODEL OF 1905) except for the birds head grips. post some pics and turn rufe loose on 'em. i'm curious to see what you have. 0 -
I agree with vdms55 about it probably being a Military and Police model. The caliber marking .38 S&W Special CTG. Commonly called the .38 Special. The .38 Smith & Wesson is a different cartridge. What you call a bird's eye grip is probably what is commonly called round butt.
Pictures will help.0 -
If you have the serial number right, you have a 38 M&P model of 1902 1st. change. They were made in 1903-04. Still need pictures to give value. 0 -
HEY, I THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP. I UP-LOADED 2 PHOTOS ON HUNT-101, UNDER THOMAS COTTLES--PLEASE LOOK AT THEM AND LET ME KNOW IF IT IS WHAT DICK SAID IT WAS.
I REALLY LIKE THE FORUM... AND THE WANT-ADS HAVE HELPED ME OUT A LOT. BY THE WAY--CAN I FIRE NEW 38 LOADS IN THIS PISTOL?
THANKS,
