sounds like you are describing the .38 MILITARY&POLICE (MODEL OF 1905) except for the birds head grips. post some pics and turn rufe loose on 'em. i'm curious to see what you have.

I agree with vdms55 about it probably being a Military and Police model. The caliber marking .38 S&W Special CTG. Commonly called the .38 Special. The .38 Smith & Wesson is a different cartridge. What you call a bird's eye grip is probably what is commonly called round butt.

    Pictures will help.

If you have the serial number right, you have a 38 M&P model of 1902 1st. change. They were made in 1903-04. Still need pictures to give value.

HEY, I THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP. I UP-LOADED 2 PHOTOS ON HUNT-101, UNDER THOMAS COTTLES--PLEASE LOOK AT THEM AND LET ME KNOW IF IT IS WHAT DICK SAID IT WAS.
I REALLY LIKE THE FORUM... AND THE WANT-ADS HAVE HELPED ME OUT A LOT. BY THE WAY--CAN I FIRE NEW 38 LOADS IN THIS PISTOL?
    THANKS,
    BIGMELVIN/LAMELVIIN
