Winchester 1894 38-55
I don't know much about old lever guns and was hoping to get a value and date of MFG. It is a 1894 chambered in 38-55. The bore looks bright and I believe the gun is original. I'm sorry for the last pic it won't resize.

Hi again, I dug out another gun, or piece of one, that I plan to list here soon but dont have much knowledge on it or if it is something even feasible to warrant a listing of. Picked this up in a 'box lot' of stuff at an auction about 20 years ago.
It is, or was, a winchester 1894, I assume the caliber is 38-55. What intrigued me was the front sight as I hadn't seen one like it before or since. The bore of the barrell looks good but outside it is rough.
The barrell is 25 1/4" long, the tube is 25 1/8" long, the serial number on it is 56437.
My question is if anyone knows if this is an original Winchester front sight or something that was added on later?
The front sight is marked with the dates:
PAT.AUG.31.85*JULY 14 91.0 -
With the defaced serial number, it is worth ZERO, and it could very possibly get someone some time in the Federal Pokey.
With what is left of the serial number, that Model 94 SRC was manufactured in January of 1922.
It is quite apparent that someone also added some varnish to the stocks, and was not smart enough to remove them from the receiver frame before slopping the varnish on the stocks.
There is essentially no remaining factory finish on that SRC, and with the previously mentioned issues, it is worth very very little.0 -

I would email Bert directly and explain how you posted the picture of the gun. I is a nice gun with a few issues. He will give you a correct assessment. I do like that gun even with the varnish. I have a couple of them that people did that to over the years. If you are going to list it for sale place it with a no reserve auction on the auction side. I think you will be very surprised at the price you may achieve. Please post a link to it on this site to allow us to bid on it. 0 -
Your carbine is in a highly sought after caliber, and if the bore condition is excellent and it functions properly I would not be surprised to see it bring double the amount of what a typical 30-30 would bring in the same condition on auction, provided an extra coat of varnish has not been added and it has its original finish. 0 -

There is no reason to "X" out any part of the serial number as this limits Bert's ability to provide you with those details if available. He is compiling serial numbers for his survey and may have more detailed info with the complete number.
