pin fire shot gun question

My buddy bought a very ornate finely engraved pin fire 16ga shot gun. The only name on it is on the rib between the barrels in what appears to be German silver. The inscription reads Greis Munchen. There are two dots above the u. The barrels are 30" long and the lever to open the gun extends from the trigger guard forward under the for arm. The gun is tight and is in very nice condition. Can anyone shed some light on what he has and maybe an approx. value? Thanks

    if you do a google search with the correct spelling, greiss munchen you will get a few hits to check out since you didn't post any pics.

    Being a Pin Fire most likely would date it to before 1880. This would be before German firearms would be required to have Proof Marks, (1891).

    Greis would most likely be the name of the gunsmith who made it. Munchen is of course the German name for the city of Munich.

    Many of these guns were brought back by G.I.'s after the war as souvenirs. As a consequence if in original very good to excellent condition, it would have much more value nowadays in the fatherland then over on this side of the pond.

    There is a shotgun collectors web site called shotgun world, or something similar. You might find it by GOOGLEing the name. Many European and English collectors/dealers hang there. Post quality photos of the Pin Fire for FMV, valuation, and identification over there.
