Winder muskets

Two questions: first, I see the earlier High Wall muskets referred to as Winder Muskets in addition to the Low Walls I had always thought were the only ones correctly using that name. Is this a correct name for the High Walls. Second, I see Low Wall Winder muskets advertised as being .22 long rifle caliber. I thought the Low Wall Winders were properly .22 short. Were any made in Long Rifle or were some specially ordered in LR-- or were the chambers just lengthened?

    All three of the .22 caliber Muskets variants are "Winder Muskets". I just recently wrote a detailed article about each of the three Winder Musket variants that was published in the most recent W.A.C.A. magazine.

    Both the 1st and 2nd variations are high-walls, and the 3rd variation is the Model 87 low-wall. The vast majority of the Model 87 low-walls were chambered for the 22 Short, but there were a small number of them that were rechambered by Winchester for the 22 L.R. cartridge. The 1st and 2nd variations high-wall Winder Muskets were chambered for both the 22 Short and 22 Long rifle, with a more of them being 22 L.R.
