I would like to know how much my 98k is worth and how to restore it.
It has bnz45 markings on it which i know are rare and has a covered front sight. The wood has been lightly sanded and has some rust but not very much. all the numbers do not match either but in the nazi factory in austria was pushed to make the guns and the numbers may not have been matched. Im sure many of you know more than me about this gun and give me some advice of what to do. Thanks

    That said, rust, sanded stock and mismatched numbers aren't positives as far as a collectors are concerned when buying a Mauser.

    Just one more thing before i add pictures i got it at an auction for 150 and was told by a mouser collector it was worth over 500 because of the bnz45 and front sight. Is getting the rust off with a rust remover a smart idea or not. Thanks

    The problem isn't actually the rust but whats under it. Light surface rust sometimes can be removed with virtually no damage to the finish if done correctly. Rust that has caused deep pitting to the steel can't be easily or economically fixed, your stuck with it. If it's a late war BNZ with a phosphate finish similar to our Parkerizing it can be sand blasted and reparked to disguise the pitting and blend it in with the original finish.

    Use some 0000 steel wool and oil on the rust. Take your time. If the rust comes up, could be worth $500 if not import marked and non matching. Would be potentially worth more if not sanded and in cherry condition.

    rob87t.....welcome to the Forum and thanks for your questions. As you have been told, we can't tell you much without those photos. BNZ45's are not that rare and a covered front sight isn't either. But some BNZ45's are valuable, particularly those with the single rune between the BNZ and the 45. Check yours carefully to see if that rune is there. If so, it is one of the "concentration camp" Mausers. I would not try to deal with the rifle's issues until we can tell you what you actually have. In trying to "fix" the problems you might be hurting the value even more. Look forward to your photos.

    1st welcome, 2nd "for 150 and was told by a mouser collector"........it's spelled MAUSER. 3rd, the bnz 45 while not common is late war and quality isn't the best, sanded and rusty dosn't help any either. you got your moneys worth but not much more.

    rob67t...interesting. I think you bought it at the DE auction last year at the beach. Correct? Give me a call and we can discuss it as I really can't tell much from your photos and can't do closeups, unfortunately. And I don't remember the rifle so give me a call and we will run it down for you. If it had been a BNZ with the S rune, I would have remembered. So would have the other collectors in the room that day. I am in the book so I look forward to your call.
