As we all know from time to time in collecting guns we run across something we know nothing about and need help. In looking at a collection I came across a Smith and Wesson model t-19-4. It is in a very nice wooden box with a cleaning rod and brush never been fired 357 caliber. It has more engraving than I have ever seen on a pistol, not a space on it that is not engraved . The left side of the barrel just said in plain English S&W 357 Magnum and on the right side of the barrel it is engraved with S&W 357 Magnum. No name, like a presentation gun on it any place. it appears to be nickel plated. I have tried to post pictures on this site but just can not get it to work. I did see where pictures were sent to a very large auction house and they estimated the value to be between 2,500 and 3,500. I have purchased a very nice 1886 from these folks and they are trying to sell rather than send anything to the auction house if they can sell it outright.
I seen one on the internet at another auction house and it appears to have the same engraving as this one does and exactly the same box.
Can anybody tell me if S&W had special addition pistols that where heavily engraved. In a presentation box?0 -
You need to take the grips off and give us the right serial number. It should have a "K" in front of it. Also open the cylinder and see if a model number, like 19-1, is there. 0 -
It does have the K as you described. The serial number was on the arm of the wheel. That being, pulling wheel towards me and in front of the cylinder the numbers 70,xxx is there. There does not seem to be a serial number anywhere under the grip. This is why i am posting this question. Markus Registradas? Made for Mexico federales? 0 -
The SN will be located on butt also. Picture is unclear, but, it might be a pinned barrel. That would put it @ 82 or earlier.
What caliber is it?
The Marcas Registradas was due to other companines making copies, not because of any Federale order0 -
Hard to say based solely on the blurry image, but the gun is blued, and has adjustable sights.
If as you say its a 357 magnum, than that means its most likely a model 19, with the 2.5" barrel. These were made from the late 1950s all the way through the late 1990s. Literally millions of them were made.
*ALL* Smith and Wesson revolvers say "marcas registradas" on them. That has to do with trademark dispute against Spanish-made knockoffs 80 years ago.
In terms of value, again, we'd need to nail down an exact model variation, but in general the snubnose 2.5" versions are worth a little more than the usual 4" barrel versions. All else being equal, the earlier ones are worth more than the later ones.
Yours seems to have some mottling on the frame under the hammer, and that would detract from the value a bit. Original wood grips (which yours lacks) might add a few bucks more to the value over the replacement compact Pachmayr grips on there. Of course original box and papers would also be desirable.
I'd guesstimate yours as worth maybe $400 give or take a bit depending on which exact "dash" number, and wear level.
And before you sell it, consider that the short barreled Smith 19 is really a superb home defense type revolver, and it could also make a good concealed carry gun, if you were partial to revolvers.0 -

Thanks for the info. Just note about condition on this pistol. due to a poor camera (i phone) The discoloration you see is reflection of oil and me touching it and the lighting. Kinda that oil rainbow affect. This pistol is as black and shiny as a new bowling ball. I found the model and it is a "19" no dash like 19-1 ect. Again thanks to all for the info. Not selling but trying to do a general appraisal for insurance purposes. 0
