308 Norma

I was in a gun shop this past weekend and they had a used Winchester Model 70 for sale chambered for the 308 Norma. Would I be correct to assume that Winchester never manufactured that model in that caliber and somebody rechambered the rifle after it left the factory?

  Winchester never chambered a model 70 in .308 Norma Magnum. It's a good cartridge, though, pre-dates the .300 Winchester Magnum by a year or so. If the price and the condition is right, I'd consider it.

  Good cartridge but expensive unless you reload. Cases are easily made from several common cases. I had one which was a super accurate shooter. The rifle you saw was likely rechambered from 30/06.

  The .308 Norma can match, or nearly match the .300 Winchester Magnum in ballistics. It is very close if both are loaded to their maximum potentials.
  
  If the rifle is in nice condition, and especially, if it is the more desirable CRF (controlled round feed version), pre-64 type, you have excellent potential there.
