First Chronograph
I am fairly new to reloading and am at the point where I need to buy a chronograph. I have done some research and narrowed it down to either the CED M2 (which has IR option) or the PACT Professional XP (with IR). I would like one that is reliable, easy to set up and easy to use. I reload .223 and .203. I would very much appreciate any suggestions! [:D]

Welcome to the forum. In some ways this is a tougher question then it might appear. Personally I have no experience with either of the units you ask about and I suspect that many members may not have either. This is IMO because when any of use have bought a chronograph it is often the only one we ever buy. At least that was/is my experience and should we buy another it will be to get a higher end model. I believe that the Pact line of chronographs are repackaged Chrony units and if so then it should do great by you. I bought my Chrony over a decade ago and it is still going strong. The thing about chronographs is trying to decide what level of add on gadgets you yourself want it to come with. Quality control being what it is I would guess that most currently produced chronographs, if they work at all comming out of the box, will work fine for years to come. Good luck....... 0 -
I bought my Chrony about 20yrs. ago. It still is working good. Got a Beta-Master a couple years ago to upgrade. I've used a Pact the gun club has and they are a good brand.
Any chronograph is about the best investment a reloader can make [;)]
Buy the one you are happy with, I don't think there is a bad brand out there.0 -
Thanks! I am glad to hear that the Chrony brand is good...I have read some bad reviews...which is always hard to know what to do with since someone with an axe to grind can make things sound worse than they are. I had been considering the Gamma Master Chrony and had dismissed based on some reviews, but now is back in the running! 0 -

Bad part of some of the Chronies is that the electronics are between the sky screens...one errant shot and you are done.
I have a PACT, and love it. Ohler is a VERY good brand too.

Thanks for the insight! I hope I never shoot mine, but bad shots can happen to good shooters [;)] I have read Ohler made the benchmark chrono for shooters but not in production...saw on ebay for $699 which is a bit salty! I might pay $350+ but my wife would kill me if she saw the visa bill! 0 -

PACT also makes the Model 1, if I am not mistaken.0 -
As one that has shot my Chrony Beta Master, I'll give you a little insight. I hit a support rod for the sky screens and it deflected my bullet into the center section and then through the front of the case, pretty much destroying the main unit. The readout was on my table and was unharmed.
I later called Chrony and was told by a very nice lady, that for $49.00 plus shipping, they would send me a whole new unit with rods and sky screens. I did that and received the new unit in 5 days.
I was very pleased with the customer service and I would highly recommend the Chrony brand. They also offer rebuilding and trade in options. I don't know if the other brands would be that responsive to customer needs or not.

I agree with Bubba on Chrony's service. We were using my Chrony at a match years ago and it got shot. It was fixed in a very short time. After I got the Beta-Master I shot the front eye and they sent the parts quickly. Very good service. 0 -

I can't answer the question about which unit(s) are better, but I will tell you that I have seen a guy shoot out one of the supports of his chronographs right in front of me with his Kel-Tec!
I think he just patched it with tape right there, but it literally would have ruined his day if the hit had inactivated the chronograph. (IE he'd not have been able to chronograph the several loads he had worked up, etc).
