Civil War Artillery Shot Canister

Hello

I have an fellow who wants to trade me what he says is a original Civil War shot canister. I do not have any experience with these items so I am searching for some help to identify this object. Is it a real Civil War shot canister and has it been restored?? My first concern is the wood looks to nice for the age and the horizontal seam in on the metal can.

  I sure dont see that wood as 145 years old .
