Winchester 1903 .22

My son was gifted a tube fed pump action 1903 .22. Looks very similiar to the 1890 one we have that shoots shorts only. This one states on the side that it is Short, Long and Long Rifle. Cleaned it up and tried some long rife. Won't load and it is clear that the bullet is too long. Is there some adjustment here or were long rifle's a different length back in the day.

    Looking for value estimate on this Winchester 1903 .22. Great condition. Still works. Tried to take pictures of markings but they didn't come out very well. Any info would be helpful. Thanks!

    Gun has a PW in a circle and the following text:
    Manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms CO.
    -New Haven,Conn.USA PAT. Aug. 27.1901. Feb.25.1902.Feb.25.1902.Feb.3.1903-
    -Winchester- Trade Mark- Mod.1903.22cal.automatic.
    Number 3281 (I am assuming serial number.)

    Most Winchester Model 1903 rifles are very hard pressed to reach the $400 mark. Even though it was Winchester's first semi-auto Model (of any type), it has never gained a significant collector following. Due to the difficulty in obtaining ammo, it does not appeal to the "shooter" crowd very much either. The only thing that might improve the value on your rifle a small amount, is the fact that it is a first year (1903) production.

    The mark in the oval is actually a superposed "WP" (Winchester Proof).
