Marlin 1895 bore restoration.
Likely to need a reline. Bore is pitted the first 6-8 inches, and while the rifling is pretty good, it's not likely to handle heat treated gas checked bullets at all.
Wood is very rough, but restorable.
Receiver is tight smooth and "rust free" considering its age and other condition.
I want to preserve the origenal barrel's pit and patina exterior.
Any suggestions?

The restoration project is a Marlin 1893 rifle, 26" barrel. 0 -
relining is generaly used on 'pistol' type cartridges (.22 l.r., .32/20, .38/40 ect.)the 'high' power rifle cals. have too much pressure for this. If your rifle is a .30/30 it could be rebored to .32/40 or .38/55. you could also try scrubing the bore with a lead lap and fine polishing compound if you want to use cast bullets (I did that on an old .38/55 and it shoots very well). 0 -
Thanks for the recommendation the lapping compounds already, so I think we're on the right track.
I considered (and would prefer) opening up to .32 Win Spl.
However, the difference between groove size on the .30s and bore on the .32s really leaves VERY little room for variables often encountered in reboring, especially the potential inconsistencies in old steel alloys. The other consideration would be .35/30-30, then the .38-55. I'm set up for .35s already.
If you have a recommendation for an smith who has a good track record for reboring, I'd certainly like to talk with him.0 -
OK I was gonna let the experts answer but it's been a few days so I'm gonna burn up one of your 10 replies.
*You could get it rebarrelled and have it browned instead of blued.
*C.E.Harris reported getting acceptable cast accuracy from some pitted war relics, provided you seasoned the bore with several shots and used a milder charge which did not require cleaning after every shoot(so you could leave it seasoned). His info should be on the web. key words: "red dot", "the load", 2400, Mattern, Krag, and the names of military calibers: 30-'06, etc. If You can't get it to work, the rifle might still be usable with jacketed, maybe .303 jacketed-the Remington 180gr 303 seems to have a huge jacket opening and may work at 303 velocity- and save the overboring funds for a new cast bullet rifle.
*I have also heard sleeving is only for lighter rounds but it was only from the brownells catalog; maybe there's a different system that would work.
*You could lap just the end of the barrel or maybe the whole barrel to .303. If the plan failed, you'd still be able to overbore.
*You might find a vintage barrel.0 -
