Widener's Shooting Supply is offering this Hertinberger 9mm + P + as submachine gun ammo.
Any idea if this is okay for modern 9mm hanguns such as a Beretta 92, Astra A- 80, etc?
Seems like it would be alright as long as one is aware of the extra recoil.

    Any comment welcome as usual.

    thanks

Both SHOULD handle it fine, but when it doubt, just give the manufacturer a call or email and they can give you a 100% sure answer.

Usually, the ammo maker will state which firearms the ammo is safe to fire in if there are any pressure issues.

Some of the +p+ has hard primers for the extra pressure, and won't work reliably in some pistols.

Is 9mm +P+ designed for subguns, pistols or both?

Depends on the load in question.
I think there are versions of +P+ ammo intended for each.
Which one are you talking about?

    quote:Can an MP-5 handle +P+
Don't know this one for sure, but I'd think so.

quote:Can a Glock 19/17 handle +P+ (personal preference of Glocks aside, actual factual knowledge please)
Supposedly at one point in the distant past, Glock explicitly said that +P+ ammo was OK in its pistols, only to recant that later for legal/liability reasons.

I think that means a few rounds won't hurt the gun.

    quote:
I realize extended use creates extra wear, I'm talking about loading just for Duty Use or protection, not shooting it on a reg basis

Again, which round are you talking about?

While I doubt a few rounds of this stuff would hurt your gun, I question the need for it. If you stick to the premium stuff for occasional use, "ordinary" 9mm+P is pretty zingy.

For example, Corbon claims 1350fps from its 115 grain 9mm+P rounds from an ordinary Glock, and I believe that number.

Now this is probably one of the hottest (if not THE hottest) 9mm+P rounds, but if you compare to 1350 fps from a 125 grain 357 SIG round, and that's really not too shabby.

My take on 9mm+P+, is that yeah, if I had some I'd use it, but I don't think its necessary. If I really needed 9mm+P+, I'd be shooting 9x23 or 357 SIG instead. (EDIT or .40SW. . .or 10mm. . .etc).

And given the choice, I think I would choose a more conventional +P JHP round over a +P+ FMJ submachine gun round.

    I got 1182 av. vel from a 3 1/8" Keltec P11 barrel and 1308 fps av. from a 4 1/2" Tokarev barrel using Hirtenberger 124 gr +P+ 9mm.
Primers were hard so adjustments had to be made in both pistols.
Slide springs on both were increased in spring rate.
Firing pin length on the 9mm Tok was increased to the 7.62x25 length and the P11 striker spring rate was increased.
Recoil from both pistols was serious.

I don't expect you'll get an okay on +P+ from any handgun manufacturer, simply because there are no SAAMI pressure standards for this designation.

I bought some Austrian sub gun ammo on GB 7-8 years ago, but before I bought it, I called Ruger to find out if it would be fine in my P85. The lady at Ruger said it would be fine, just change the recoil spring once in a while. I don't remember now if it's rated a +p, or +p+, but I think it is +p+.

    +1.

**NO** manufacturer will EVER tell you its OK to use this ammo in their gun. . .at least not on the record. They have no way of knowing what kind of pressures this ammo runs at, and they don't want to be held liable for damage to the gun OR damage to the shooter. If they're going to tell you anything, its only going to be that they recommend against using overpressure ammo in their guns and that using it will void the warranty of their guns.

That said, you can still use a bit of common sense.

For example, 357 SIG is supposed to run at a max SAAMI pressure of 40,000 PSI. 9mm +P runs at 38500 PSI, per SAAMI.

So, if you figure 9mm +P+ probably runs at or maybe just a little higher than a max pressure of 40,000 PSI, any gun DESIGN that can handle 357 SIG is probably strong enough for 9mm +P+. If you figure that most of the 9mm guns have .40sw and 357 sig versions available, I think its fair to deduce that most of them should be able to tolerate 9mm+P+-like pressures.

(If you think about it, there is more "meat" in a 9mm chamber than a 357 SIG chamber. . .the 9mm barrel/chamber ought to be stronger).

Remember also, that EVERY gun is supposed to handle "proof" loads that run at 30% over normal pressure. That means that (in theory, at least) **ANY** modern 9mm gun should be able to handle ammo of 45,000 PSI, without blowing up. In other words, 9mm+P+ should still be running less than proof pressures.

Note that I'm not endorsing use of 9mm +P+ ammo from a pistol. As above, while I think you can probably use it safely in limited quantity, I have to question the utility of actually doing so.

I would also be pretty hesitant to use it out of certain gun platforms. For example, the Berettas use aluminum frames, and they're known for frame cracking. +P+ type ammo in that platform is just asking for trouble, I think.

    EDIT:

quote:Winchester 127 GR Ranger SXT JHP +P+ is the specific ammunition I was referring to

Oh, the new "Black Talon" round.

This one was designed for pistols, and I'm quite sure its safe for your Glock. And yeah. . .if I had it, I'd carry it.

Lots of Police use this round; in fact, I think its usually designated as "for law enforcement sales only". (Which, contrary to popular belief, does NOT mean that its illegal for civilians to buy or possess).

The only thing I'd add is that if you intend to shoot a lot of it, you should consider beefing up your recoil spring a bit for less slide/frame battering.

357 SIG generated an additional 100fps over 9mm +P+ in the short Keltec
P11 pistol. The heavier slide spring was used and a heavier striker spring was needed to indent the tougher 9mm +P+ primers.

You would be better served taking the time you took to ask this and practicing shot placement. All the ++p++ ammo in the world can't make up for poor shot placement. To me +p ammo is a just a marketing ploy.

We carry the 124 gr +P+ round in duty Glocks. Great round, great results.

We asked H&K about this round in the MP5. They said no.

I would stay away from it in the MP5.
