Remington 11/48 Operating Handle

I just purchased a nice Remington 11/48 in great condition.
I tool it out to shoot and noticed two things. First it would not cycle low brass shells. It would actually seperate the brass from the plastic tube. Is there an adjustment for handling different power shells?
Second, when I fired high brass it cycled well but the Operator Handle flew out and is lost. Is there anyone who sells a replacement? I noticed a loose operator handle on another 11/48 I saw. This most be commom, is there a fix for it?

    SB,I suspect that the first thing that gun needs is a good cleaning. I mean broken down, trigger group removed, stock removed and action tube cleaned and re-lubricated. Clean the trigger group with a good brake parts cleaner and relubricate it (oil), lightly. Wipe down the magazine tube with a rag and brake parts cleaner. Then wipe the tube
    with an oily rag leaving a LIGHT oil film on it. Clean the bronze friction ring and reinstall in the barrel ring. Clean the recoil spring.
    Clean the interior of the barrel and especially the chamber. It sounds like there is some corrosion in there. You should be able to get an op handle from your local gunsmith or Bob's Gun Shop.The handle loss is kinda common, but if the retainer spring/ball retainer is clean it seldom comes out. There are no friction ring adjustments.Reassemble and go shooting.

    If it doesn't cycle, get back to us.

    OleDuk is right. These guns are old and were rarely taken all the way down for a cleaning.

    note that these use the same operating handle as the EARLY 1100's.
