Purchased in 1958 need to Know what and where I can get a firing pin there are two one early one late

    I just bought a marlin 39a and was wondering how old it is. The serial # is J8485. Thank you to all that reply.

    I am still on dial up internet in this area so pictures are a long drawn out process. My father-in-law tore it down, for reasons I do not know, and put all the pieces in a box for the last 20 years. To the best of my knowledge I think he told me one time it had broken an internal spring in the action. Old age and diabetes has taken a toll on him this past year or so and he has trouble remembering anything. He sold the balance of parts to me for $50. I figured I could buy the parts and have a qualified gunsmith rebiuld it for a couple hundred and have a decent gun to plink around with. It is not rusted too bad, surprisingly, and the inside of the barrel is not pitted or rusty at all. Any way to determine the age by the serial# ?

    Try the guys at www.rimfirecentral.com they have a Marlin section.
    Someone there might have the parts you need.

    Thanks dcs, I will try that. I downloaded a parts list from the Marlin website so I think I can pick out what I need to complete it.
    I just was not sure it would be worth fixing or just part it out. The walnut stock needs refinished but I have a freind who can do that for cost.

    Thanks perry, I am not sure about that. Is that a common problem with these rifles? Should I be leary about fixing it and trying to shoot it?

    It's a pretty simple gun to assemble for someone with a good mechanical ability. I'd check the Brownells and Numrich Arms catalogs for the needed parts. One of the common breaks on this gun is the ejector spring. Very easy to replace.

    That's good to know. I am mechanically inclined. I just have to figure exactly what all is missing and replace it. I would still take it to a gunsmith for final evaluation.

    Brownell has just about all of the parts for this rifle, Mid Way also has most of the parts. +1 on this being a fairly easy rifle to work on and a pleasure to shoot. If the new magazine seem to be too high watch the auction sites for a buy on one.
