forend repair...
How does one go about discerning the wood type for a repair involving replacing a corner of the forend? It is a Pederson model 1000. BBL says made in Italy, would that mean it is some type of Italian wood as well?
The forend involved has intricate "fish scale" carving on it, so replacing is not an option at this point.

Are you sure it's not Pedersoli?Sand the finish off a small spot on the inside to see the color of the wood .It's probably Walnut.A small piece of matching wood and some epoxy should do it ,but it will show. 0 -

The maker of the gun means a lot less at this point than the maker of the wood...Mother Nature.
As noted, you will need to sand a patch off of someplace that won't be seen and it will probably be walnut by the looks of it. You will have to find a piece of walnut that is about the same shade as yours. Or at least you can stain to about the same. That's the only thing you can do when replacing wood.
The other option of course is to have the stock replaced. Then all the wood will match. But, you will have to pay a bunch to have it match the style of the old stock. Or not, you might find a good looking stock that doesn't need any extra amenities.0 -
