First AR-15

Good Everning Everyone,

I am planning on purchasing my very first AR-15 shortly. I've always wanted one and I have looked at a few rifles which include:

Colt
Bushmaster
Stag Arms

I'm leaning more towards the Stag for various reasons. I just like the rifle in general since I live in Connecticut.

Anywho, I've handled M16's before in basic training but haven't picked up a rifle in about 4 years since I work in an administrative position in the military right now. I'd love to get an AR 15 with a pinned collapsable stock and a forward hand rail that I can mount stuff to. I don't want the the forward hand rail like the M16. That was a pain in the ass to remove.

So does anyone have any advice? Any information or help would be greatly appreciated.

    Whatever brand you buy, get a flat top receiver. That will allow you to mount optics down the line. They make a tool that makes removing the standard handguards really easy.

    Rock River is pretty good too.

    Stag Arms. They have been making top-quality AR components and more recently entire rifles for a long time. I own a Model 6. Very pleased with it.

    Have you checked out DPMS at all? I bought one last year the sweet 16 they call it. Nice rifle. If the world was ending or ww3 was starting thats the one out of the gun cabinet i would be grabin.
    How do you like that walther p22? i was looking at one a few weeks ago. Might go back and pick it up.

    if $$$$ are no hold back i recommend the following, if money is tight, save your pennies till you can get one of these rifles, if you have state laws restricting your choice of rifles/carbines, just tell the company what you need and they will be happy to accomodate your needs.

    I'm assuming that is a Ruger SR-556? It didn't say in your post.

    Also, there is a similar rifle for a nearly same price and that is the Sig-Sauer 556. I don't have any experience with the Ruger yet, but the Sig-Sauer 556 is outstanding in reliability. It is also very accurate.

    if you want to mount multiple tacticool things look at the ruger. it's got rails all over it.
    otherwise, the dpms panther A3 is one of the best bargains out there, in my very humble opinion.

    Hey vin211, I have a rock river arms varmint model 20" SS barrel. It has been one of the best rifles I have ever owned. It is My primary varmint gun(coyotes,bobcat, ect.) It is very accurate expecially with hand loads. Under 1/2" at 100yds.

    You can't go wrong with any of those manufacturer's, though you will pay a little more for the Colt name.

    you will find a different answer with every post on the subject of the AR-15 (AKA evil black rifle).

    Buy the one you feel is right in your gut, use it, accessorize it and then build or buy your second one (then the 3rd, and so on, and so on...)

    If the three that you mentioned are the ones you prefer do what Basejumper said and don't get steered clear of what YOU want.

    Sand warrior, It is a LWRC M6A2. I like tha M6A1 myself, the basic A2 a-frame front sight is a more sturdy package..



    Well If you want a basic light contour M4 clone then the Stag is as good as any, and better then some. They also offer a piston carbine for a few dollars more then thier DI carbines.

    If you want a heavier barrel for sustained shooting then I'd suggest a CMMG 16" mid-con, mid length gas system carbine or 14.5 inch government profile mid-length with permanent hider.

    If you want a light weight gun that still shoots good then look into a bushmaster carbon 97s carbine or superlight carbine. I like flat tops over A2 carry handle uppers..

    Out of them all the Bushmaster superlight or the CMMG government profile 14.5 mid length carbine would be my picks.

    Get a flat-top you like from a good brand name maker. You won't go wrong.
