I'm no expert, but have been through the Beretta armorers school. The frame on a model 92 an 96 are identical, and I use a model 96 slide on my model 92 with no problems.

It is an easy switch and there are no safety issues.

I have heard that you can switch the slide on a 92 9mm to a 40 S&W? Is this possible and are there any safety concerns with the higher power and pressure of the 40?

Well, yeah, you'd run into a problem if you switched JUST the slide!

But assuming you're switching the slide, barrel, recoil spring, and magazine, you can put the top of a model 96 on a 92 and get it to work just fine.

Both magazines will also run both calibers.
