Colt 1849
I just purchased a Colt 1849. It is in OK shape. Ive definately seen worse. The Cylinder is sloppy on the shaft. Is there supposed to be a busing like the Colt Single Actions?

I have a opportunity to purchase a colt 1849, 110,000 serial range. I have no knowledge of these except what I have found on Internet. 4" barrel. Cylinder scene is 90% very sharp, bluing on barrel 50%, everything is tight. No pictures. The bottom by the trigger guard is patina. The owner stated that it is silver plate and was patinia. Everything looks original. He is asking $ 1200.00 Is this in the price range of these? 0 -
No offense, if your not familiar with the older BP Colt revolvers. You shouldn't be buying one unless you have a knowledgeable/honest collector or dealer do a hands on with it. Asking folks on the net their opinion, isn't going to cut it. So many replica and fake Colts have been made over the years, unless your a pro god only knows what you could get stuck with. My 2?. 0 -
$1200.00 is a bit steep for a '49 with that high a serial number, unless it is in superb condition, or factory engraved.
I strongly suggest that you buy a copy of the 9th edition of "Flaydermans Guide to Antique American Firearms And Their Value" and read it before you buy any antique firearm.
There are a lot of unscrypulous dealers and even more fakes and doctored up original guns. Reading Flaydermans book can and will save from being took, and its price is a lot cheaper than the price of any antique gun.0 -
Thank you for the input, I have all the books, been studying the colt 1849 on line. The gun shop selling this specializes in old Winchesters and Colts and I have been doing business with him for 10 years.
I have not seen on line the silver plating on the trigger guard and bottom of frame in any pictures. I was looking for information on that item and other tips prior to starting this area of collecting. I have been collecting 1st generation SSA pre 1900 for a while but no percussion pistols yet.The serial number is from 1855, is that late in the time frame for collecting?0 -
The 1849 had silver plating all over the brass. With a strong cylinder scene, $1200 is in the ball park. If you but it, you'll also want to purchase an authentic flask, bullet mold, nipple wrench, and a tin of caps to make a cased set. They sure look better when they are in a case with all the accesories. 0
