25-20 ammo

some help please. i have some ammo in auction and i am not really sure what it is after everyone hollared at me.
it is marked 25-20 with the W R A headstamp. case lenght is .162 .163
but the bullet diam is ony .224. bottle neck cartridge.
any idea's. i have bids on it and the gentleman says he needs the brass similar to what is there. but i want to know myself what it is.
thank you for any help anyone can come up with.

    Hi,

    There are two 25-20 cartridges and they are different and not interchangeable which is probably why people are asking questions.

    There is the 25-20 Single Shot which uses a 0.257 inch diameter bullet and a case length of 0.163 inches or thereabouts.

    The other is a 25-20 WCF (which was very similar to the 25-20 Marlin). It uses a 0.257 inch diameter bullet also but has a case length of 1.33 inches.

    Since your cases are 0.162 and 0.163 you have the 25-20 Single Shot.

    You are correct 1.63 inches. I made a mistake and misplaced the decimal. Thank you for pointing this out.

    Sounds like 25-20 Winchester (WCF) could be 25-20 Single Shot

    If its this auction you refer to. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=161057490#PIC They aren't 25-20 SS or WCF. Appear to a wildcat off the 25-20. I've read about it and trying to find what it is.

    EDIT: The R-2 Lovell is the wildcat on a 25-20 Single shot case I had read about. Those don't appear to be Lovell's, the shoulder doesn't look right for the Lovell.

    They look like Maximum Lovell cases.

    [?][?][?]... last time I checked, my 25-20 Single Shot (S.S.) cartridges were a fair bit longer than .163 inch. In fact, mine measure 1.63".

    There were two separate wildcat cartridges that were based off of the original 25-20 S.S. case... the 22-3000 (22 Lovell) which was the first (which is what I believe smokinj38 has), and then slightly later, the R2 Lovell.

    There were three main .22-Lovells made on the .25-20SS case.

    .22-Lovell
    .22-R2-Lovell
    .22 Maximum Lovell which the ones in the picture are, just as Mr. Black said.

    thank you gentlemen. acctually i did not put a decimal point in it the case lenght is 1.63 it sounds like the 22-3000 useing a .224 bullet. i thank you very much for the information. does anyone know if there was a factory rifle in this cartridge or was it strictly a wildcat?
    again thank you for the time. this is the first time posting on the gunbroker forums( never realy checked it out before) and as ussual with most firearms forums the comunity is great.

    The 22 Lovell (22-3000), R-2 Lovell, and the 22 Maximum Lovell were strictly wildcat cartridges.
