Bert H- Winchester Model 04 help

I just picked up a Winchest Model 04 .22 single shot. The barrel is marked: 22 Short, Long, or Extra Long. Is the Extra Long designation the same as Long Rifle? Should I just use the .22 Short when shooting it? I've never heard of the Extra Long.

Also, the only numbers I can find on it are stamped on the back of the buttplate on the toe, and written on the end of the stock, in what appears to be orange chalk. Both numbers match. Would this number help in determining the age? I'd be happy to email you the number if you need it.

    The fact that it is a Model "04" tells me that it was manufactured after February of 1919. The 22 Extra Long is not the same as 22 Long Rifle, but it is perfectly safe to shoot 22 LR in you your rifle. Winchester discontinued the 22 Extra Long (in favor of the 22 LR) in 1927.

    The orange chalk markings are unknown to me, but they will not help to date it. What will help, is to know what type of butt plate it has. Prior to May 1925, the Model 04 has equipped with a steel crescent butt plate identical to a Model 1873 32 W.C.F. After that time, it was equipped with a shotgun style black hard rubber butt plate.

    It has the steel crescent butt plate. The numbers I mentioned are 347, if that helps at all. I also noticed that it has the "WP" proofmark in two different locations as well, over the chamber and on the bolt.

    Thanks for the help so far, and thanks for the info on the Extra Long.[:)] That had me puzzled.

    OK, that narrows down the manufacture date to somewhere between March 1919 and April 1925.
