For deer hunting, by far the 38-55 is the most powerful. I know some fella's who use one of those from time to time for nastalgic purposes to deer hunt. They are decisevely more then the fabled 30-30. For a fun gun to shoot with minimal recoil, there is the 32-20. There are a many of them in use today, as well as the 38-40(about same power level as a 40 S&W, and actually 40 cal, not 38), and the 44-40. It would be hard for me to pick one, as the 38-55 is available in the model 1894, and the rest are in the 1892...having both is nice.

Thank you. Ive shot a 32 20 and it didnt seem like it had much power to use for deer unless you hit it just right. I was thinking 4 40 would be the one to get but the size of the 38 55 is cool. Maybe your right just get them all.

    Rex,

Of the calibers you listed, the 38-55 is by far the best cartidge for all around use.

Wow....I was thinking this was going to be a .243 Winchester, .270 Winchester, .308 Win., .264 Win Mag, .300 Win Mag/WSM discussion.

My personal choice of those calibers is the 38-55. It's a little more along the trajectory and power lines of modern cartridges. ...a little. And not a really hard recoil either.

Then it would have been 300 Winchester Magnum...the king of the 300's in popularity.

For the lever rifle, pending were you hunt for Deer. States that have much larger buck I recomend 38-55 caliber. Otherwise the 30-30 Winchester caliber will always be the most popular, dependable stopper, affordable, easy to find.

Thanks guys. After shooting the 32 20, I was having some difficulty with why Winchester would bother to make that caliber since the 44 40 seems to be just as good?

38 55 is on the list
