1897 Winchester Takedown Butt Plate
I have an 1897 Winchester Takedown, Serial #E666917, which according to several websites was made around 1919. The butt plate has a large chip around the upper screw and I am thinking about replacing it. It is made of either wood or hard plastic, black, with no markings. I am not sure because when I tap on it, it sounds like wood, but looking at the chip there are no wood grain features, just a jagged edge much like a piece of plastic. My questions are: 1. Will replacing the original plate decrease the value of the gun? 2. If not, is there somewhere I can get an identical replacement? I have seen only the metal or hard rubber butt plates with the criss-cross pattern and Winchester logo. Thanks for any help you can give.

There's two versions, one with the spur on top, and one with out. They have both here:

Model 1897 serial number 666917 was manufactured in the year 1917. The original butt plate was black hard rubber (without the widows peak) verus wood or plastic.
If you can find an original Winchester hard rubber butt plate that fits properly, it will not have any negative effect on the value... anything else will reduce the value.0
