witch 1911 to buy
I want to buy a 1911 for a shooter, and they are so many to choose from.....witch gun has the most bang for the buck or witch ones do i want to stay away from??? i have read that some of the cheeper models start showing signs ot wear after 5 or 6 hundred rounds.......looking for recommendation do you have any.........

This question comes up from time to time, so if you do a little search using the "Search" feature, you'll get a spectrum of opinions.
In my opinion, its a fairly competitive market for 1911s right now, so you mostly get what you pay for. Low end guns will shoot, but they're made of lower grades of steel and lower-end parts. And the sky is the limit in terms of what you *could* pay if you wanted match-grade and custom everything (barrel, trigger, sights, checkering, etc).
If you can afford it (and they're not really THAT expensive), I'd say find yourself a nice used Colt series 70. You'll never second guess yourself about not having picked the "right" brand, and it will not only hold its value over time, it will probably appreciate.
That's what I did, and I'm glad I did it this way. Here's mine with Bomar match target sights:

OK seriously, it comes down to what your budget is and what you are trying to accomplish. I think you can get a Rock Island for $400 and a Colt Series 70 for $700-800. If you just want a "blaster" to put rounds downrange, the Rock Island should be fine. You can still trick it out with custom parts if you are so inclined. But in ten years your used Rock Island will still be worth about $400, where as your Colt will be worth $950.
I think in terms of bang for the buck, you could also look at Springfield Armory guns. Those are fairly well regarded, and should make good shooters with a little more value retention than the lowest end guns.0 -

Edit - re: durability, I have 2k thru mine no issues except the idiot scratch (i are the idiot in question) for the slide stop.

Robert Coleman...ditto for the Colt Model 70 or earlier. Always get your money out of it if you ever resell it and you get to shoot it for free. I have a Colt pre-Model 70, the rather rare "bb" model (special barrel, special bushing from the factory) that I have had since 1969. Like to say I was a genius when I bought it, but it was just the luck of the Irish. Shoots great. Yes, it was expensive in the day...about a weeks pay at the time. But never regreted it. You usually pay for what you get, and you can't beat a older Colt, IMHO. I also have a newer Colt 1991 and it is OK, but not anywhere near as nice as my "bb." It is, however, a good shooter and might be what you are looking for. I have seen them for @$600+- on the auction side from time to time. Hope this helps and good luck! 0 -

Sounds like a broken record but add one more vote for the Colt Series 70. . .or older. Bought one recently in nickel with Bomar target sights for $650 (it was on the auction side at that price). With the non stock sights it will never be a collector but it is a great shooter and I suspect the value will at least keep up with inflation. Buy an old Colt, you won't be disappointed. 0 -
I will say it is hard to beat a Colt for a collector and shooter both. However, if it were not a colt, I would get a Para-Ordnance. I have nothing bad to say about mine. You can get both a double stack or single stack. 0 -
ive been saying this for the last 6 months, but no one agrees with me:
the best value out there is the para GI Expert. it's a beautifully made basic 1911 that will accept any standard mods available (check brownells for available parts). it's a fine shooter as is and at $500 you've got lots of room for mods as you grow into it.
i'm a staunch colt 1911 guy, but i bought the para and will buy another one later this month.

Colt 1911s are the way to go. I have three (45 ACP, 38 Super and 10MM Auto) and they are all great. 0 -
again colt series 70, i got a gov model in 45acp a comander model in 9mm, and a 22lr conversion kit, actualy in a 1911 model colt is the only brand ill buy 0
