I have been looking at the surplus M44s,and am thinking about getting one for a plinker. Is there any quality difference in the Romanian,Polish,or Hungarian versions? Any reason I should buy one over the others?

    I won this M44 Mosin Nagant and who ever donated it took the banneot of and started to grind down the mounting lug.It looks realy bad. Does any body know who much would it effect the accuracy if I had the barrel cut off just just after the lug. I plan on puting a scope on it so i dont need the front site.

    I wouldn't be cutting a barrel any shorter on a M 44 then it already is. The muzzle blast is bad with the 20" barrel, much shorter and it would be really ugly.

    Carefully Dremel off the lug so it's flush with the barrel, then finish the job with files and coarse emery cloth, cold blue etc., so it won't look bad. M 44's are so cheap nowadays it ain't worth putting much money or time in them. My 2?.

    I agree with Rufe 100%

    Yeah, you *could* chop off the barrel then recrown it for accuracy (though a recrown might not be necessary if your muzzle were counterbored), but I don't think that's either the most effective or even technically easiest solution.

    Easiest/best thing to do is just carefully file down the remaining bayonet lug as Rufe suggests. You should be able to get a nice cosmetic result that way.

    In case you haven't shot it yet Mosin Nagant M44 guns are known for a GIGANTIC muzzle blast (see below for actual pictures).

    Making the gun shorter isn't going to help here.

    For what its worth, I shoot my M44 all the time, and I just removed the bayonet. . .left the lug in place. I figure, having the lug doesn't hurt anything, and I've even toyed with the idea of modifying the existing lug to fit something else (eg a more modern bayonet, mini-1913 rail, etc).

    In our shop, here in Eastern PA, M-44s have been selling upwards of $200. We recently received 6, mummy wrapped, unissued 44's dated 1946 and 1948 - five have sold in the past week for $350 - yes, Three Fifty! Overseas Supply apparently is drying up and wholesale prices have doubled in the past year. How are prices in other parts of the country?
