High Standard h-d military

Wont feed very well.Tried three different brands of ammo.
The magazine does not sit up in the frame real tight. About 4 out of the magazine full will fail to feed.But if I push up on the magazine it will feed all 10. I tried to gently bend the catch out, to no real advantage. Any suggestions?

    Can anyone tell me the DOM of a High Standard model H-D military serial # 203517 and also I am going to reblue this pistol and was wondering how to disassemble the magazine as it has a what looks like a plastic follower and did not want to put it in the hot blue? Any info is appreciated. Terrill

    Sounds as if either the magazine or the magazine latch is bad. Try another magazine to see if it can be fixed that way. The Triple K company makes replacement magazines. I've had good luck with their U.S. made magazines. If your still having the same problems with a replacement mag, probably the latching mechanism has problems. Unfortunately the H-D Military hasn't been made for 60 years, and the original manufacturer has been out of business for 25+ years. Replacement parts might be a problem.

    Your best bet is to find an original High Standard magazine. The issue is mostly in the spring. When you load it full it's too much pressure. As it empties they feed better. I have one and the only thing I could make it work was getting an original mag for it. Some have had luck with Triple K's, I haven't.

    Thanks for your responses. I will take it out tomorrow and try only partially loading the mag.

    If the catch ends up being the problem, and if it's not broken, but suffering only from a weak spring, that could be an easy fix. Take measurements off the old spring and give the folks at Wolfe Springs a call. They'll be able to find something close enough to work.
    If the problem is in the magazine you may be able to use a newer mag from the 101 series. I just looked at the mags from my H-D and my 103.
    The follow button is larger on the new mag, and would have to be swapped out, but other than that it LOOKS like it might work in the older gun. Anyone tried that??

    p.s. John S., thanks for the information. Also, on the off chance that any readers of this thread don't know John, don't let the low number of posts fool you. He is THE H.S. authority, bar none! Has been for more than a few years; and from my limited past experience with him, one hell of a nice guy to boot. Might even have been the one that made me a new chamber after an old H-S I had blew out a section of barrel where the extractor cut had been machined deep.

    THe Model H-D Military was solw with the finger style magazines and around 1952 when all models were transitioning to the pil style magazines High Stadanr doffered a lip style magaizne with the same small diameter used on teh early guns as replacements. I believe that Brownells sells new lip style magazines with the smaller button.

    Gun parts corp. also has them for this pistol.

    Can't say for certain vis a vis the magazines made by the outfit in Texas, who uses the High Standard name? But a lot if not all of the replacement magazines sold by Gun Parts Corp are actually made by Triple K. Before you by any magazines from GPC, I would ask them specifically if they are original, or modern aftermarket reproductions.

    go with a genuine circa mag for your gun. and make sure it has the groove in the back....small button.

    I fiddled with the lips on the magazine a little.I guess I got it real close to right. Took it out yesterday evening and put 100 rounds of bulk pack Federal 40 grain through it with out a hitch. Man am I pleased with this pistol.
    Now if I just think to keep my big hand out of the way of the hammer,Ouch! Thanks for the info and help.
