I just purchased a 586 on the auction side and it is mounted with Tasco scope and comes without the rear sight. If I remove, the scope and mount, how difficult will it be to install a rear sight (assuming I am able to find a rear sight which works as I called Smith and Wesson this morning and was told that the rear sight was obsolete). I am a newbie so please forgive the question if the process is essentially unscrewing the mounts, filling in the tapped holes and screwing in the rear sight.

I expect it will be fun to shoot with and without the scope, but really interested in whether "without" is an option.

    Thanks,
    Laser

They won't be super-cheap, but you shouldn't have too much trouble finding a sight that will fit.

Yeah, that older sight isn't made anymore, but there should be plenty of them out in used-parts land (auction site, Flea-bay, Numrich/Gun parts, etc).

I think you've pretty much got it on installing the rear sight, and I doubt it will pose any problem.

You need a .146 rear sight. www.brownells.com has them in stock. You need to see if yours was a black blade or a W/O. If the front is a red ramp, you need the W/O. They are about $58+shipping from Brownells. You probably need the screw, #940-037-350, for $1.61, also.
