Smith and Wesson Frames
Hello, I am trying to determine if the S&W K/L frame and N frame share the same grip portion, which would make aftermarket grips interchangable. Specifically, the 686 Plus K/L Frame and the 629 N Frame. Seems to me I've seen a certain wood grip on both guns. Is that possible?

Used to be that the K and N frames were distinctly different sizes. When the L frame came along it shared the K grip size, though the rest of the frame was beefier than the K, being somewhere between the K and N sizes. I thought that's the way it still was, but someone recently posted that the N frames now share the K/L grip size as well. If so, I'd like confirmation from someone who knows the new Smiths. I'm still stuck somewhere back a few years.[:D][:D][:D]0 -

I was not aware that the N-frame now shares the same grip size. I do know that the K and L frames are the same size grips as the gigantic X-frame though.0 -
The N frame is close enough now to the K&L frame, that the grips work on all three -- as long as they are round butt [;)] 0 -

The L frame gun was designed to use the same grips as the K frame, and that's always been true. The extra-large Magnum "X" frame was also designed to use the K/L frame grips.
Traditionally, the large N-frame guns used their own grips and K/L grips would NOT fit correctly.
This may have changed, but if so its been only relatively recently.
If you go to the Smith website, the model descriptions only specify the frame size, not the model frame, nor the grip designation.
If you look at the Smith GRIPS for sale on their website, Smith is still listing separate K/L and N frame grips in both square butt and round butt configuration.
Further, in ROUND butt configuration, Smith lists grips for the "K,L,F,H", and "N/G" styles.
Disregarding for the moment what the heck F, G, and H are, at least on Smith's own site its still making a distinction between K/L and N.0 -
I have put the X frame hogue grips on a 629 and they fit right so I guess if the X grip will fit on an N and the X is the same as K/L then maybe they're all the same now. I think I just confused myself though. 0 -

An F frame is a K frame but in stainless.
A G frame is an N frame but in stainless.
An H frame is an L frame but in stainless.0
