.22 WRF Ammo

Out of curiosity, does anyone know if anyone makes a shotshell for the Winchester 1890. Dad says he would stick a shim in the receiver to modify it for .22LR, but that seems kinda crazy (possibly dangerous) to me.

We mainly use it for rodent/pest control, and using a full on slug seems kinda unnecessary

    I have never heard of rat shot for WRF. If you have a LR gun available I would use that with shot shell.

    Do not place a shim (or any other foreign object for that matter) into the receiver! Yes, it is dangerous

    The 22 WRF cartridge is larger in diameter than a 22 LR, and if you somehow managed to get a 22 LR to fire, it will burst the case, and send hot gases in places you do not want.

    If you need to shoot 22 shot that bad, go buy a gun designed for 22LR. Anything else is asking for trouble.

    I have a couple of rounds of .22 WRF shot- strictly a collectors item. As the guys said- an inexpensive .22 LR would cost you less than 2 boxes of .22 WRF shot.

    I'm with 11b6r.

    If all you want is something to shoot rat-shot with, any old single-shot .22 with a rusted-out bore and worn finish ought to work fine. You well may be able to find something like that for $50.

    .22 MAGNUM rimfire shotshells are readily available, though I'm pretty sure they would NOT be safe to fire from your gun (assuming you could even get them to chamber):

    Still not a good idea, the 22 WRF is the blackpowder version of todays 22 Hornet. Same/very similar case dimentions, but at much lower pressures.

    Thanks to the guys below for the correction(s), to many letters and my brain is somewhat toasted today (spent the weekend measuring, ID'ing and cataloging several pounds of British and Metric cartridges)

    Actually the WRF is a shorter WMR case... much like 38 special and 357 magnum.

    It is the 22 W.C.F. that is a essentially a blackpowder version of the 22 Hornet... not the 22 W.R.F. (Winchester Rim Fire)

    As was pointed out, the W.R.F. is the preseessor to the WMR.

    IIRC the pellet count in a .22LR is only 2 less thsn the .22 mag.
    Stick with the LR.
