BERT;THE SERIAL# ON MY WIN.MOD.1894 25-35 SRC IS 504377.CAN YOU HELP ME FIND THE CORRECT REAR SIGHT FOR THE DOVETAIL ON THE BARREL?THE REAR SIGHT IS MISSING AND I AM LOOKING TO TRY TO PURCHACE ONE.THANKS

    The DOM is July of 1911. The most common sight was the Carbine ladder sight, but it could also have been equipped with a 3-leaf Express sight.

    Side question (for Becca, as well as for me)...

    Will the rear sight letter from Cody?

    What I mean is, if no mention of the sight by Cody, then the rifle left the factory with a 'standard issue' sight. Am I safe to assume this? And if so, what was the sight as issued by Winchester when no customer prefered sight was ordered? Thanks, Joe

    Hello Joe,

    In this case, the serial number on Becca's Model 1894 SRC is too late (high) to letter.

    Ordinarily, if no sights were listed in the ledger, then yes, it left the factory with the "standard" (cataloged) sights. That said, I have frequently run across Model 1894 Carbines with a factory original 3-leaf Express rear sight that was not mentioned in the ledger. The "standard" sight for the SRCs was always the "Carbine" (No. 44 as of 1926) ladder style sight. The early version was marked 2 through 9, with the later version 0 through 20.

    The thing that has always befuddled me is fairly early Winchester Rifles that have factory installed Platinum Lined 3-Leaf rear sights; yet they aren't mentioned on the Archive Letter. I have letters on an 1899 vintage Standard Rifle that had the Platinum lined 3-Leaf sight as well as a 1901 Extra Light Takedown Rifle with a laundry list of options on the letter that mentions the front sight, but no mention of the 3-Leaf sight in either case.

    More often than not, the 3-leaf Express sights are not mentioned in the ledger entries. Why that is the case is unknown, but my thoughts on it are this... the 3-leaf Express rear sight was a relatively common sight (used on many different Models), and it was considered the standard sight for all of the Winchesters that were shipped to England. As such, it may have been viewed as a "quasi" standard sight by the people who wrote the entries in the warehouse ledgers.

    Bert, I suspect your thoughts on this matter are correct and they are certainly reasonable.

    These little quirks in the factory records, Colt or Winchester, are the things that drive collectors crazy!
