AK Yugo Underfolder - Safety Plate

Bob, that channel on the uf stock arm should clear the safety. Easiest fix would be to take a little material off the safety tab.
They are meant to fire with the stock extended & folded.

While you are working on the gun, I'd recommend you stake the pin that holds the UF stock on the gun.

This pin can fall out really easy. They missed that step on alot of these Century UF rifles.

Good website for disassembly of the UF stock:
    http://home.earthlink.net/~mwsjb/AKbuild3.htm

    Another decent uf site:
    http://pookieweb.dyndns.org:61129/Yugo/M70/m70.htm

    Edit:

    Safety Lever
If you can just bend it a little, that would be even better.
Google Yugo AK disassembly, my filters here block most sites. You really just want to take the safety out of rifle all together to work on it. Just don't over bend it as it could break.

Disassembly is pretty easy to do but is a little different than a std ak as I believe the yugo's sheppards hook (fire control group retaining wire) hooks over the safety,

    Pin
You might've already lost your pin. Buddy of mine lost his while we were at the range. The pin keep that wheel from unscrewing and keeps the stock tight. The pin should be flush with the wheel.

If you feel up to it, you could disassemble the stock, take the wheel over to you local small hardware store to find another pin or drill rod for it. Or try a couple different drill bit sizes. Find one that will fit tightly (to the point you need to pound it in) and cut it (the drill bit) off with a dremmel too.

Here's 3 out of the 4.5 ak's I've built at home. Top one is a combination of a Romanian G kit with a Yugo krink kit UF stock.
    3551432476_022943060d.jpg

I have another Romanian G built, and a yugo krink that is unfinished.

The ugandan security forces over here use a hodgepodge collection of aks but some of them have brand new yugo krinks. Makes me really want to finish mine.

One more note. I find a bench vice padded with some rags makes working on AK's so much easier. What I like about AK's is they are really easy to work on. Most of the time all you need is a mallet and some pliers.

Right on, the safety only obstructs the trigger carrier. If some thing obstructs the safety relieve the material.

To Drobs if you're still hanging out..

I just got the rifle back out and had a look with my magnifier.

That round disk on the right side at the pivot point of the folding stock has holes around it as you show in your picture same as mine. I do have a pin (couldn't see it before) in mine all the way thru but it is black and sticks out maybe .015" on each side. The pin has a .030" x 45degree chamfer and there is a stake mark at each end. It looks like it is firmly in place.

What are the other empty holes for? On mine I don't see anything that would fit into them, but on yours I can tell that there is a little wear on the finish around the holes.

Does anyone know if this safety plate is hardened? I would guess that it is. That would mean that trying to bend the tab could break it. I really hate to mess up the finish on the end of it by grinding it away and I'll have to remove nearly half of its length.

Measured at the tip of the plate, my tab sticks out about 5/16". Is that what you see on yours? You did a good job with the picture, any chance you could show me how your folding arm clears the end of your safety as it passes by it?

Also, that button at the rear of the top of the receiver doesn't seem to press in to allow the top to come off. Any idea what I'm doing wrong. It doesn't press in except maybe 1/32". I've tried safety off/on, trigger pulled, bolt back.... no difference.

    Thanks, Bob

You good to go with pin. I think the extra holes are just for ease of assembly.

You should be fine to bend that safety. It's just stamped sheet metal. Ought to be able to bend the tab with some pliers. That's simple tweek most shops do on AK's.

On the side button (above the wheel), it actually locks the recoil spring guide rod in place. You push that ever so slightly and push in the recoil spring tab button (that pokes out of the rear of the top cover) then pull the top cover off.

See the recoil spring in this picture:

That button that sticks out of the rear of the top cover needs to be pushed in at the same time the button on the side of the receiver is pushed in.

Edit: 3/20/10 response to Drobs update below

Receiver cover release - Thanks, I did find the release button as you said and it works. I haven't seen a lock pin like that before.

Muzzle break - I made to to the Orlando gun show today and picked up a round muzzle break/compensator (has a large hole side to side near the end and a couple of small holes on the top. I was lucky that it is tighter than the slant break and is solid. I thought it would not look as good as the slant, but now that it's on I'm quite pleased with the looks of it.

Scope mount (new issue) - I would like to mount a scope or sight on a rail. There is no side mount on the receiver and I have a cover with a rail that I tried on another rifle and it just wasn't right. Too loose.

I have considered using a forward rail and replacing the front grips with it (scout mount). On my rifle, there is some sort of hand guard / launcher sight made of a piece of sheet metal that pivots just in front of the gas tube and folds down backwards on the front top of the grips. It's not really functional except as a heat shield, but it does look nice. It overlaps the ront end of the front grips by about 1 1/4". Any thoughts?

Standard sights (it came with) - the front has a flip-up tab with a white stripe on it. The use of this is clear (you can use the post or the white line). The rear however has the standard square notch and then an additional piece (with a square notch also) that flips back 90 degrees. If you were to flip the sight straight up, this could be flipped up and form a new square notch right on the top. This movable sight is not spring loaded and just kind of flops around. It does not interfere with the standard sight up or down, I just can't figure out what it's for or if its missing something. (just noticed there is a small straight piece of spring wire inside it, but I don't know what it does)

Safety plate - now that I have the cover off, I have the safety plate out also. It is spring steel. Looks like I'll have to grind it.

I'll try answer these in order.

Locking Button - I believe the yugo's have that added feature to keep the top cover from flying off when launching rifle grenades.

I find that plastic or rubber mallet is really handy to have when disassembling and reassembling ak's. Just getting that cleaning rod back in is so much easier with a tap from a mallet.

Muzzle Brake just make sure it's for a 7.62x39. [:0]
Also muzzle attachments need to be US made for 922r purposes.

Scope Mount those replacement top cover scope mounts are crap. Like the ones made for the sks, they flop around and will never hold zero. There are a few good quality optics mounts out there for the AK. The 1st is sold by Krebs Custom www.krebscustom.com, I'm blocked here from that site but if you go there and look at accessories it should come right up.

The Krebs mount replaces the rear sight and goes across the top cover to lock into the rear of the receiver. I forget how it works on a Yugo UF but I'm sure there's an adaptation. That one runs in the neighborhood of $300 or more? I forget.

I'd have to dig around but there is another mount similar to Krebs that replaces the rear sight with a pc of railing that extends partially over the top cover. It doesn't lock into the rear receiver. I forget the website that sells it. I seem to recall it being a polish design.

    Edit: Google AK Beryl rail.

There is the Ultimak fore end rail system that goes over the gas tube. They are good mounts but really really heat up. If your not careful you could melt some optics on there. I've talked to Marc Krebs about the Ultimak (I'm from IL and used to work at a gun shop with some guys that are at Krebs) and he wasn't impressed with the way they clamp to the barrel, to the point he designed his own system.

My internet is running slow right now but I saw another mount that locks in between the pistol grip and the receiver, runs up the side of the receiver, over the top. Interesting idea. Here it is:
http://www.blackjackbuffers.com/index.php?main_page=index&manufacturers_id=44 - some more mounting options at that website too.

Finally there is a dedicated small red dot that replaces the rear AK sight altogether. Grab a shotgun news and that company usually advertises there. Criticism on that optic is that in order to replace the batteries you need to completely remove the optic from the rifle to get to the battery compartment located on the bottom of the optic --- thus killing your zero. www.laruetactical.com

There are cheap quad rail forearms out there, but I wouldn't waste my time with them.
As a whole I enjoy my aks for what they are.
    .
    Flip up sights
Those are actually night sights. I forget the paint they use but imagine they had a little glow to them at one time. Any purpose for today? Not really but a kinda cool.

    Grenade Launcher gas cut off
Flip that big thing up and it cuts your gas off to launch grenades - also makes the rifle into a single shot with really hard extraction.
I think some one make a tennis ball laucher for the Yugo.

    Couple of websites for you:
