H&R american double action

Can anyone tell me about the above? I purchased one cheap, just to have, and I'm not quite sure what I have. It will take a .38 Special case, but I'm sure it is an older .38 chambering. Maybe I could shoot reduced .38 Special loads, with the bullet pushed down into the case.

What is the little lever under the cylinder rod? Thanks for any information. Wade

    I have come across an H&R pistol wsith the inscription The American Double Action on the top strap. From research I understand that these were made from 1891 to about 1941. Any info on where to get parts and diagrams to repair this would be helpfull, also approx value?

    the years of manufacture for the american double action are 1884-1941. try numrich arms for what you are looking for. there are two models;
    first model 1884-1904 for black powder cartridges
    second model 1905-1941 for smokeless powder

    the second model will have the caliber marked on the left side of the barrel.

    there are no markings of any kind cal ser# ect. except for the american double action on the top, and the grip panels have the H&R crown and appear to be original, Cyl and barrel (round not octagonal) seem to be about .32 cal.

    The serial number will be found under the left grip panel. With a round barrel you have a 1st Model, Bill can help determine if it is Variation 1a or 1b and approximate YOM, when you supply the serial number.

    Thank you for all the info so far. There is the #202 on the surface under the left grip panel. Early mfg? This is getting interesting. #s are quite large compared to modern mfg, hand stamped?

    i have one more question. look at the pin that retains the rear trigger guard. is it slightly off set to the rear or is it directly below the hammer screw.

    the serial number were hand stamped

    1884-1904 32 caliber 6 shot, 38 caliber 5 shot, 44 caliber 5 shot, pull pin cylinder release, barrel length 2?, 4? & 6 inches nickel finish standard, blue considered rare Marked on top strap "AMERICAN DOUBLE ACTION",
    first variation will have a round barrel & rear trigger guard retaining pin slightly offset to rear--1884 only
    second variation will have a round barrel & nickel trigger guard --1884-1888
    third variation will have a octagon barrel & nickel trigger guard --1888-1897
    fourth variation will have a octagon barrel , blue trigger guard and company name and address on left side of barrel----1898-1904
    100%=$225 60%=$95, 1st & 2nd Variations rarely seen, add 50% premium., for all American Double Actions variations and variants: add 15% premium for blue finish, add 10% premium for 4 ? " or 6" barrel, add 5%-10% premium for nickel trigger guard (pre 1898) and 10% for first variation

    Thanks bill, 2 1/2round barrel 6 shot nickel trigger guard and the guard screw is offset to the rear.Missing hammer screw, main spring still there but may be missing trigger spring. apparently there was no loading gate just a cutout on the right side. will try to post pic this fri.
